Anthing an Explorer would do a Disco will do better, including use fuel if it's a V8.

I've got a '97 D1 and my first thought for a family of 5 is that it might not be big enough for all the bodies + all the gear.

We put a Milford cargo barrier in ours so we can stack it to the roof but it is still a tight fit on trips to the beach with boogie boards etc etc with 5 on board.

Roofracks might be a solution.

A D2 has quite a bit more boot space so if you have enough cash that might be worth considering.

Otherwise - a brilliant vehicle. Over 10 years of trouble free motoring and it's still going strong. Will probably never sell it.

Am used to having to tow a trailer almost anywhere with the Explorer when we went camping so nothing will be too much different there. I used to get about 540 - 560k's on the H/way with an 80L fuel tank before, how does this compare to the Disco's? Can you use the E10 fuels? etc, etc.

E10 fuels are false economy anyhow, the energy in E10 fuel is lower then normal fuel of equiv octane.

You'll burn more to get the same distance, overriding the cost saving.

Economy wise, you'll be looking at 400km for the equiv 80l offroad.

Onroad maybe 450 if your foots light.

We bought ours to replace family sedan and to pull horse float as my husbands defender is too precious (apparently?), his excuse is he might want to go bush when I am away competing!!
Ours is a 98 V8i 3.9 Auto, 80 ltr fuel tank, which we then put on gas, on fuel around town driving about 20 lts/100 kms, open road without lead foot (100-110 kph) we get about 15 lts/100 kms. Gas tank is only 60 litres (opted for the manifold tank system to save space and put false floor on top), get better economy and slightly less power, So any heavy/uphill towing is done on fuel.
Fantastic family car, only four of us plus 2 dogs! Space could be a prob on long trips but as already mentioned taking a trailer solves that.
Would definitely recommend one to anyone!
