Are you driving with the windows closed and air con off in QLD ?
How many beers per 100 km are you consuming ?

nope... the dealer when I bought big red was the first person who told me about it with big red being my first car with aircon that worked the WRX doesnt count that was the wifes and driving a WRX for economy is like buying a gstring for a fat chick, you can but you dont.

Without the boost gauge I had to rely on the worked out fuel economy with aircon vs windows but i never felt happy with the result as there was always too many variables.

have to give the busters credit tho they did inspire me to revisit it. And going by their experiments when Im just driving for the sake of driving and not to get somewhere I normally hang around the 80ks mark that they worked out that the two different approaches (windows or aircon) share about the same power consumption. having the aircon off makes less noise and puts less heat infront of the radiator and I like that.

One of these was done by Choice magazine about twenty years ago, might have been NRMA.

I'm pretty sure that the test was at highway speeds rather than just driving around town.

and what a difference when getting a tow from a semi or B-Double....

just watch the boost gauge fall away to half what you normally need to travel at a given speed. I've even deliberately fallen about two semi lengths behind and still get a reasonable tow, the aero efficiency of a Defender is that bad....

    Can someone help me here?

Since the re-chip if I run the car at low rpm I get mega smoke. I'm taking this is bad?

So, I've been trying to drive with light throttle but on boost. IE, about 1700 - 2500. Is this the right or wrong thing to do? If I do this I don't get much smoke happening.

yep, know that trick and use it often if I find a friendly truckie going the same way..

holding HC liscence with oversize endorsemtns to 4.0m I know that you can loose everything but a hummer behind a standard size semi trailer.

Towing oh god can it TOW.......

Ok so i did a sort of unofficial tow test today. picked me up a rangie sans roof...

Id never dreamed that after paying the toll on a toll way and getting laughed at by the ricer boys and girls that in a fit of "well lets just see what this can do" that Id be able to catch up to the hot chicks in the mobile crumple zone SCX33 with the tight tops and the short skirts and with just 2 lanes and me taking up one of them and flirting with the girls that I could ever hammer out 110 up hill down dale while their boyfriends sat behind me chewing diesel exhaust...

all this on 16psi of boost and me having to stay off all the noise.. oh an all up total trip none of it done nicely (time was an issue) 160+ks for a little over the 3rd indicated 1/4 of a tank.(1 needle width over half to a needle width under 1/4)

their boyfriends were somewhat ****ed off at me having spent more than 20 minutes perving at their girlfriends and wanted to know what made me think I could do that..

I just told them that I can do this as I have a vehicle that can do 110+kerbing 4t+ and the seating position means I can see not just their faces but their tits and that the passanger really should be wearing panties...

now I was just guessing but when she sheepishly smiled, nodded and then tried to pull her skirt down I just nodded to the rice boy and rolled of smirking and laughing.

Shoulda stopped and got her number... but its made me think, maybe some plasticoat black polish on the bar work, cut n polish the body work and some brasso on the ally plate I might just go do some "hoon laps" and see what I can see... I mean Ive got the chipped engine Im getting the bigger straight through noise exhuast and a huuuuuuuuuge intercooler.....

    oh yeah...

    it tows ok...

the smoke is unburnt fuel unburnt fuel is not cool as it means that its still trying to burn as it comes out the cylinder thats what raises the EGT's at low RPM's its not as critical but the more you avoid smoking the better your fuel economy is going to be...

Because I short shift first and second before letting 3rd work I get a fair bit out of the first 2 gears as I barely get it up to boost before changing But I spend a lot of time reading the traffic and aiming to time the lights so I dont need to be in anything less than 3rd.

If you keep it nailed in say 3rd(or better) and the boost gauge starts to drop off AND your starting to get smoke But its not slowing down much then your raising your EGT's very very quickly and its possable to exceed the design temps of engine parts and thats very very uncool.

The same applies to if you get right into the noisey pedal on a hill and the boost gauge is not climbing (or its nailed at the limit) and your not accelerating then your just cooking up the turbo.

For best results Fit an EGT or spend a shedload of time in a vehcile with one and learn what its going to do under what driving conditions and avoid doing the stuff that makes it swing up hard and fast.
