Class action filed against eBay over PayPal

An anti-trust class action lawsuit has been filed in the United States of America against eBay under the Sherman Act alleging that eBay utilises its nationwide monopoly of the online auction market to monopolise the available forms of payment that sellers can use on eBay. The lawsuit alleges that ‘sellers who would otherwise accept only money transfers must also accept payment card transactions'.

I couldn't believe it when i read the email (i even checked the email date incase it was an April Fools joke).

I have a PayPal account, but HATE USING IT. I use direct deposit (like everyone else).

If Oztion was any good, i'd switch. I might start checking it out more to see if it improves over this...

It was mentioned in an earlier post about PayPal charges: does the buyer pay a PayPal fee? I thought they did (i remember not buying something once cos it was gonna cost an extra $10 for PayPal - but that doesn't sound right surely). Their website says:
"PayPal will continue to be FREE to use for all purchases made within Australia. "

    I'M NOT HAPPY

I know I won't be selling on ebay again unless it is Pay on pick up.
Hope they get burned big time for being such a bunch of .........

I would rate pay pal 2 out of 10.
What are you talking about paypal is instant a bank transfer for me takes at least 24hrs.....

The only time paypal is not instant is I think over a certain amount the seller has to except payment...

I have used paypal now for about 3 1/2 years one time I paid a bloke that was expecting my payment after an auction ending the whole transaction was over and done with in 10 mind he even had time to get it in the post that day and I recieved it the following morning....how is that for service.

From memory you can't even use bank transfer in uk, either that or no one selects it.

The other good thing that everyone has to get paypal is you need a current bank account registered to your address which makes everyone traceable....in regards to fraud.

As both a seller and a buyer on ebay this is both a good and a bad thing. As most have said its secure for buyers, and its fast. Direct deposit can take 2-3 days to process, if you have funds in your paypal account or its linked to a visa debit or credit card the payment is instant. There is a small fee less than a dollar if you sell and item and recieve a payment and if you transfer less than $150 into your bank account there is a $1.50 transaction fee, some banks charge more than this for ATM fees. It takes stuff all time to set paypal up and its efficient, yeah it might be a bit slow to load but its safer for the buyer and its internationally recognised so it makes buying stuff overseas a piece of ****.

Having said all that, its not right for ebay to take away the options. If people are happy to take the risk and use DD then that should be their choice. To monopolise the system and force people to use a system that ebay also owns isnt right.

IME, they sometimes do worse than nothing. I often wonder if the people reading the case notes are capable of understanding plain English.

Paypal is only instant if the sent funds are paid from a credit card. Where the buyer funds his Paypal account from a bank account, they then send this onto the seller as an e-cheque which takes ages to clear.

As a buyer on ebay I would never ever pay by DD or any other method unless by Visa or Paypal through my Visa debit card. Otherwise you have no comeback on the item if you get ripped off, or if the goods aren't as described etc. once you've paid money into their account, if they are not genuine you can kiss your money goodbye, you won't get it back and neither can your bank. You are protected not by paypal so much but by Visa. I was once ripped off by a seller on ebay but as I paid by paypal using Visa I was fully refunded the money from Visa,-the reply from paypal was I would get refunded if they could get the money out of the unscrupulous seller, but he was long gone. IMO the protection from paypal ain't worth squat, it's the protection from Visa that looks after you.
