Thread: Paint protection - worth it or a con?

    Some threads just keep going...

We recently bought a Yaris for the wife and the sales woman tried all the extras and we knocked them all back. My plan is simple:

Wash it weekly to keep the crap off.
Polish it every six months with a nice thick wax.
Keep the interior clean and vacuumed.
Cheap seat covers sprayed with waterproofer (3M or whatever Bunnings is selling) to protect the fabric underneath.

Incidentally, if you have leather, many so-called leather polishes are merely colouring which don't appear to do much to actually treat the leather. Same problem with shoe polishes. I find beeswax is the best for treating leather as it can really be worked into it. It won't be as shiny as the colouring, but I suppose you could always slop some colouring on over the top if that's important to you (it doesn't worry me).

    CON

When I bought my first new car (and negotiating down to the nail), I was infuriated to be offered this crap by a woman who rang from the dealership 2 min after I got off the phone from the salesman.

I played thick and said that I was astounded that my new car was going to rust/ have dodgy paint etc and told her that the deal was totally off.

The salesman then rang me and I gave him an earful along the same lines. He then told me point blank that it was a WOFTAM con and that the factory specs were all that mattered.

How do you know that the paint hasn't improved since the last car you owned? It is not as if you had one treated and one untreated car of the same make, model and paint colour to compare...

Also working in the nanotechnology field - they fed you a line...
You could argue that all the black plastic and rubber parts on your car have nanotechnology! They all contain carbon nanoparticles for colouring, UV resistance and to improve mechanical properties...
Haha very good point! All the areas of technology are advancing so quickly its hard to keep track of everything! That could be true, but I do roll over my vehicles pretty regularly (always gotta have the latest!!) so I assume the exteriors would be fairly similar (they never made a big point about it when I brought the actual car). I am no expert in the nano field but I am a fan of the product!

    Every 6 months/1 year/whenever I can be bothered:

Wash - Clay Bar - Wash - Auto Glym Super Resin Polish - Auto Glym Extra Gloss Protection.

The Extra Gloss Protection product works as a paint sealant.
