    97-98 300Tdi auto,

    The reason is simple......simplicity.

No computers (unless it has ABS but that doesnt stop you if it fails).

The TD5 engine itself isnt too bad but all the electrical crap they hang off it is not only not nessesary but makes them problematic......oh and thats why I dont like petrol engines as well.....Electricity and water, mud and dust dont mix.

Actually I'd argue that a D2 body with ACE and a juiced-up 300Tdi motor is the best of both world's - extra space/comfort without the many vagaries that go with the Td5. Having said that, I do like the ability to juice up a Td5 with a $550 chip upgrade alone...
Always looking for creative new ways to get bogged... :whistling:

76 RR...sold coz fuel was expensive at 70c/l
    93 200 Tdi Disco...old faithful...sold to make way for...
    99 Td5 Disco ACE...nice drive...hopefully reliable...

Hmmm, I prefer my D2 to my D1.
Just a personal thing...driving position is much better (for me), bit of extra space...no rust in the Alpine windows .
Yes the electronics are problematic, but I am ruthlessly eliminating the issues one by one ;p. Thinking of ditching the 140kw chip for one with more juice as Feral said...

$550 Australian dollars is a good price for a chip upgrade. Thats about £266 sterling. In the UK the going rate is about $930 (£450 Sterling), using Google's exhange rate.
