I'd have to to vote for the D1 tdi, Mechanically simple, economical, good fuel range and to my mind looks more balanced, especially with a bull bar because of the short rear overhang.

Off topic (but then most of the topics in this thread have wandered off...) If you like VW Beetles, make sure you take a look at next weeks Top Gear.

They take 4 clapped out $1000 2WD cars across Botswana (Africa), a 230 Mercedes, a Lancia and some flimsy looking english thing AND a VW Beetle. The car with the least problems - The Beetle obviously. I laughed a LOT

which is officially best disco model than?

There is no best. It's horses for courses. I love my DII, and for my use, it suits me better than a D1 would IMHO. However it has too much rear overhang to be comfortable in serious ditches etc, but the ACE makes it fantastic for road use. There are some other issues for really serious off road work, such as the hub design (I've never had a problem with mine but I do like the idea of being able to replace bearings in the bush).

Just as an aside, for anyone who really doesn't like new fangled gadgets, may I suggest a Series 2A with a Salisbury rear axle and diff? No useless comforts there, and you could rebuild just about any part of it with a standard tool kit. Just as well, because you had to every weekend to get it through the next week. (Joke) I had one back in the 70s and early 80s, and wish I had never sold it. The grown up boy's Meccano set.

    Cheers,

Somewhere in this discusion air bags as used in the suspension of a D2 got turned into the air bags as used to stop your face rearranging your steering wheel. I have a D2 with air bags and ACE. The best thing that was ever put into a vehicle that rides up high and is used for towing, you gotta love it. And the Td5 could be a bit better, some rough spots in the rev range.

why do you bag IT?? Because if I wanted to upgrade my car to a newer model I would have to have all that rubbish attached to it that does nothing other than adds to the accessories list.

why bag airbags?? Because they are an unnessesary secondary restraint system that people like you guys have made it compulsory for a manufacturer to fit to sell their cars where in real turms they dont do much more than if they werent there but you think your making your familly safe.......go read another pamphlet.
why bag ACE?? I didnt bag it I said they had to fit it because of their airbag suspention and heavier body and I said that it is unnessesary and just something else to breakdown and cost money
why bag electronics?? Because they are unreliable and make vehicals disposable as ALL electronics have a life span as do all sensors that will be a lot less than the rest of the vehical

why should I have to go on??? You dont have to, your doing that all on your own
As far as I have trouble getting out of the 60's......I think the best Disco is 97 to 98.........thats not the 60's.
