    Hi BBC

Stumbled on this thread, kept me reading for the past 3 evenings, awesome pics by the way and insight.

I was 13 and a bit in the green with 131 Loc / 20 STA, don't hold it against me, till I took the plunge to do an apprenticeship out of the army and have a family.

Was in Balibo with 1 RAR BG in 00/01 and loved Timor and the people.
We used to make regular trips to a small beach near Batugade, when we weren't out on OP's. I'll put some pics up if no one minds.

Didn't get to Afghanistan but did the last BG in iraq, unfortunately there I didn't get to interact with the local population as much.

A mate did the timor training gig, might have been around the same time as you "Ned" Kelly, RAINF from 3 RAR, old bloke, a real character?

Africa looks interesting, I plan on getting there one day. Have had the urge to drive around it since I was about 12.

    Trants,

No problem with the ex-Dropshort status..someone has to do it!

Please, please, please....I have encouraged others to contribute their own tales and pictures...not just mil type. Bungem up here.

It helps everyone appreciate what so many of us have been doing in different places since Vietnam...though most served in units, whereas I used to deploy singly; a different experience.

Can't say I particularly remember a Kelly. I was working with two x Gosling brothers, and a bloke called Mick Stone, who featured on an 'Australian Story' on the ABC.

Sorry to be a bit slow in replying....had a touch of malaria.

    Cheers,

    BBC

First Task was a brilliant one, sitting in a cheep flat over looking an air field with a couple of hookers for company. All I had to do was count out aircraft Make a phone call then count them back in, make a phone call. Not bad for a teenager.

80s did a couple of tabs into the big A to see what was going on and how things were panning out on the ground. Saw first hand how the cheep vodka and free heroin & sex had impacted the local garrisons.

The big one was 3 years in Thailand, Tri border area Thailand Laos and Cambodia. Chong Mek is the only land border crossing from Thailand into Laos. There is an Asian agreement that no country will have there army with in a couple of hundred kicks of a border, so the Border police get to do the job. Back station Det udom, forward Chong Mek. Main task was buying arms and any thing that went bang of the Locals. Det Udom was the “communist center in Thailand during the Vietnam war” there was a lot of Banditry that came under the responsibility of either the Highway police ( check points, etc) but the villagers and every thing in between was the border police. Everything from Buffalo smuggling to Villagers being wiped out ( 20-80 people) just to steal the farmers rice, play with his daughters etc. never a nice picture coming across that. Has a bit of effect on the boys, instant change from nice clowns to really serial, they track until the job is done. A very high success rate. But then they have been doing it for a few generations. For me it was either tag along or fend for myself. Fend for myself, being the big white guy! Not an option.
Any way apart from Villagers getting raided from across the border, the other common things were.
String wire across the road to take out a motor bike, Bike taken across the border to be sold. The wire has a tendency to cut up behind the Jaw bone, some time ripping the jaw out. The victims were usually dispatched by the police.
Girls Taken for slavery, was very common. Taken up to china I believe
Boys taken for the bandit gangs over the border.
I came back end off 1995 after driving over a land mine, spent time in Darwin hospital before going back to NZ, divorce papers, a large fictions Tax bill and an empty bank account. So I went to china

Hell i was just on holiday, even had to fill out an annual leave form LOL had to dial 00 350 etc i guess only a kiwi could tell the difference between a Skyhook and a mirage.

China was a different Gig, all private. China has just opened the door a bit and every man and his dog was getting into the joint venture thing. i was with a joint venture between Fletcher steel and china minerals and metals ( minmetals) there was a lot of cash about, payroll was in cash, tax were paid in cash and there was the slush fund, Theft was out of control, just a joke of a place. being followed everywhere every other day, hotel room got tossed regularly. one time i left my room got into the elevator held the doors for a mint then went back to my room got them in the act. nothing was ever stolen. LOL not like russia, english russian dictionaries and condoms never lasted long.
on the other hand the chinese were very good to me, pick up a bit of the local lingo. respect there ways of doing things and try to fit in rather than be the big white western know it all and things can be quite comfortable.
on the other side, there was the cash going to government and various different so called committee members etc. its hard to explain the structure is just so different. they are used to the company clothing and housing IE the company owned the apartments the school and the hospital. when there were some employees that needed some where to live, the director just sad OK guys build a place over there. the company supplied the materials, the government suppyed the engineers etc and the factory supplied the labour. so they built there own apartment blocks. the transition to the factory being sold to non chinese who had no understanding of this and only thought in terms of the factory alone and not of the encompassing community and infrastructure. as well as the chinese on the street expected the company to provide etc and couldn't comprehend that it was not there responsibility any more, worse no one actually knows who was to take responsibility. ADD to that with some investment and western practices, large numbers of workers were made redundant, unfortunately they could not comprehend what had happened or what to do. result a lot of bored men with no money no job no prospects hanging around on the streets looking for any opportunity. but it got worse, 1 employee was now having to support and extended family. inflation was out of control. so the first thing you had to do was make your mark. then keep your nose out of other peoples business. basically each block had is Gang and its leader, you ether paid or you didn't, I didn't and i didn't bang heads with then ether. Interesting time enjoyed it really. that was first trip early 90s. second trip was Totally different, i was involved in hospitals and hygiene, infection control ISO etc and the place had changed so much as well.
one story, standing on a bus, i felt some thing behind my but, tuned around a cought a young ***** with a razor trying to cut the bottom out of my back pocket, i grabbed him and everyone on the buss started yelling etc. Driver stopped buss, the locals grab this guy, drag him off the buss and start slapping him around. it embarrassed the chinese hence the reaction. he got 20 years for that.
left the apartment early for a run, leave the foyer hit the street and i see some thing Black on the foot path, it got my attention so i had a bit of a gander, the black was the flys, thay took off leaving a new born baby. cop told me it was a girl, unwanted it would have just been tossed out of the appartment window as soon as it was born.
i was in one district, only time i saw this, all the kids had slits in the back of there pants, so they could just squat and **** where ever. Had a mate over there, a pom english teacher, married local, all the anties came to visit one day with there kids, one kid squats and dumps in the middle of the living room, the kids mother goes off at it for not going in the hall way. Yes they did have a toilet.

Currently, in Ghana, you see the morning parade on the way to work each day...the morning ablutions being achieved in the long grass by the road. In the urban areas....'No Urinating' signs everywhere. In Afghanistan..a very much 'right handed' country it was a surprise to me to learn of what the poor locals used to actually wipe the area of concern...most places I'd ever been to would use...vegetation of some sort...Afghanistan, a high altitude desert....smooth river rocks...there was a contractor pumping the Port-a-loos on base, always running into problems sucking up rocks!
    Clean32,

Great chat stories mate...any chance of some photos? China is such an unknown to the bulk of the west...you are helping me better appreciate the place, thanks.

I was in China on leave in 1980, a lot different then. By 9.30pm Beijing was dead, every one was asleep. People were very honest then, not sure of the price then you hold out some money and they would only take the correct amount else they would loose face. Leave an old pair of shoes in the rubbish bin and they would follow you around China to return them to you. Hotels were few and Russian built, 25 story one in Canton and only 4 small lifts. Things kinda worked but you took your own plug for the basin and don't expect hot water. Most of the people still wore the Mao suits except in Shanghai. Was back there in 2007, the kids sh*** in the street still happens, in Xian a kid did it right outside a flash restaurant in the doorway. Now the city dwellers scold their country cousins for being so backward and bringing disgrace to the country. Pollution is now terrible, millions of bicycles replaced by millions of cars, driving is not for the faint hearted but they don't have road rage (yet). Things now work a lot better there, service is more polished but not as genuine as before Also the honesty has gone especially in the tourist areas. Their railways are efficient still and Australia could learn a lot from them in that aspect.
Back in the '80s to have a driving licence was a privilege, our guide did have one but he lost it for life when he ran over dog.

    BBC,

Having done the bulk of the posting to introduce us to sites across the globe, thank you.

To the others with O/S working experience, thank you also. What a diverse group we have on this forum.

What a boring life we live, 5 days a week to work, the weekend jobs around the house and four weeks annual leave. Better do something with that leave, got a lot of catching up to do.

    china first trip,

every now and again you would pick up on your minders, when you did you turned it into a bit of a game, apart from dubbing back and introducing your self to as many of them as you could ID, ( if you did that you never saw them again) go into a shop and try to buy 1 sock, that always got a strange response from curiosity to anger but they always asked, so you would respond, Beijing is cold and that you need a dick wormer. the girls would giggle the men would stare at your fly, any way buy your 2 socks leave the shop and stand out side to spot the minders, they are the ones talking into there cuffs and laughing. it got a bit harder when everyone got cellphones.

pick up hair from around the office, off the back of a girls chair but just grab as much as you can, then leave some on your hotel toilet seat in the bed on the hand bason etc, leave an extra tooth brush in the bathroom. it would be reported that you had a girl in the room that night so your minders would run around berating all the staff for letting a girl in with out telling them or getting her ID card or there cut.

look out for a street cop, walk up smile ( they smile back in fear of seeing a white guy) Take his hand and shake it,( you have to take his hand because shaking hands was unknown and he is paralyzed with fear) pat him on the shoulder, ask him about the weather ( in english) then duck into the closest shop buy a cup of tea or bun then give it to the cop. walk of 200 meters turn around and watch the poor guy being bundled into a car for questioning.
one of the sites used to feed the Bessemer converters with scrap, mainly old railway stuff, steam engines still. any way the boys had cut a deal with some red army types for a heap of old tanks gun etc, the price was paid along with the bribes etc etc how usually. all the scrap tuned up on a couple of train loads. problem was it was about 500 ton short. a month latter to save face the red army sent some new Tanks over for scrap. that was a giggle in its self, problem was the boys got stuck into them with the air lances and the first one blew up killing 5. not only were they new but armed up as well. not a good day really. about 1/4 of the office staff were never showed up next day, not smart to ask questions.
