    Kumasi - Accra = Crop Duster - a 'Fooker'.

    Accra-Dubai-Entebbe(Kampala) = Emirates

    Entebbe-Mogadishu= C130 - Our subcontractor.

First free time will come up in December when I fly the Australian branch family over from Melb to Maputo to spend a month or so there...I'll get 2-3wks with them.

Must go...I'll probably not have any internet until Kampala.

    Ghana to Uganda

G'day All, arrived here in Uganda on Saturday after overnighting to Dubai, a couple of hours there, grabbing a shower in the lounge then, onto a very full Emirates 777 to Entebbe, Uganda via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Not that there was much to see at Addis as we were not allowed out of the plane...1.5hrs sitting in a plane we'd already sat in for 4hrs..anyway!

Emirates have both a forward and downward facing camera you can view from your seat. The country flying into Ethiopia, coming across the Red Sea, Djibouti, then crossing the Ogaden country and rising up over the Ethiopian mountains is very spectacular...no cloud...and in full sunlight.

Then, with a half empty plane, another 1.5hrs onto Entebbe with the country greening markedly and flying over the river and lake systems that all drain into the Nile.

Lake Victoria is on one side of the airfield at Entebbe. I am sure many people would remember Entebbe for the freeing of hostages there by the Israeli Special Forces. There is a new terminal building now, the old one that was central to the event is now the personal terminal for President Musevene..and his mates.

The drive from Entebbe to Kampala is 35km. The country is beautiful, green, treed, and with the massive expanse of Lake Victoria right up to the horizon.

I have been well received back into the company I'd previously worked in Afghanistan with..it feels good to be back.

Now for some photos....this is a shot I took on the way out from Ghana...how many bananas can you fit into a mini-bus??????

The following photos are from my taking a walk on Sunday and from a drive out to Entebbe and back today.

    The main road into Kampala:

Traffic is not so congested as in Accra, Ghana. They certainly have more more motorcycles as people movers. Taxis are not so popular as they are in Ghana.

    Ladies ride 'side-saddle'.

A passing shot of one of the thousands of inlets making up Lake Victoria:

We are accomodated in a pretty 'upmarket' part of town...this be the view from my front verandah looking toward the city...the 30m swimming pool is below on the other side of the rail:

The golf course is just down the hill. Lush and green...note the eucalypts..something I did not see in Ghana.

One of the tactically sited bars out on the course...very 'pukkah'!

Some snaps from out on the street:

You see these 'muthas' flying around the place..they are massive....and extremely attractive, as can be seen.

Kampala is a great place. I'll be spending 1wk out after 3wks in. Plenty to do, between getting out to see the source of the Nile at Jinja...tours on Lake Vic.......and viewing the gorillas.

I'm into Mogadishu later this week....accompanying 5t of ammo. Very interested in seeing what is to be.

Mmmmm...methinks there might be a pretty serious security review underway...[/QUOTE]

Yep, there is a security review under way....it is me doing it. Charged with the need to go in and conduct a review of current situation and do whatever it takes to make the operations and living of our personnel as safe as can be.

Gotta clean the above mess up too!!...me on a bulldozer again.

Here are a few more photos you won't see in the media because…I just took them. These are the remains of two suicide vests found after the above was committed.

The firing devices, detonators, and det cord. I had to separate and neutralize the dets.

The inside of one of the vests showing the det cord running through the plastic-bagged semtex high explosive.

This the other vest looking at the outside...it appears as though it used to belong to the UN World Food Program.

The package semtex and ball bearings.

It is part of my job to facilitate the structures and implement the procedures to ensure the bad boys that would choose to wear these don't come within a 'cooee' of my people.

With a well designed security system of structures and procedures any vehicle approaching a vehicle checkpoint is to be halted at a distance that will minimze the effect of a VBIED. All occupants are to dismount and a vehicle/pers search is to be conducted; ideally, in the first instance by an Explosive Detection Dog.

The checkpoint is to be well signposted. Each vehicle as it approached the checkpoint is to be covered and controlled by direct fire. If the occupants of the vehicle do not obey the directions of the security personnel they put themselves at risk. The Rules of Engagement need to be clear to enable the security personnel to act quickly and decisively.
