i haven't had much to do with the press.

but on one occasion i escorted a film crew though (Chon Meck) Thailand Laos border crossing. not long after 15 Thai nationals were executed in cambodia while cutting trees and teaching the locals, for a local saw mill. a horrific even that shattered both governments and got the Vietnamese involved again ( sheesh)

the logistics of the op was quite extensive involving about 500 Thai, 200 Lao and 2000 Cambodian military. with sweeps and ambushes that when on for 2 weeks before the permits were issued for the film crew to get in. personally i thought it was all well done and all governments wished the world to know that there were still problems in the area and any aid would be nice.
personally i had spent a lot of time explaining the lay of the land etc.

about 2 months latter my grandmother passed away so i hoped back to NZ quick smart. on TV 60 minutes was showing the documentary. cool but i spat tacks when all it was on about was Thai smuggling hard wood from illegal milling in cambodia into thailand. what a crock. there was smuggling but that was further south and involved americans supplying arms for wood. Guns made in Singapore under license) i have never spoken to any one from the press since.

    Many hands make light work....

Working with some of the Ugandans fixing a water bore last night...we'd try to do it in a way that would be a lot safer and use less people. Not the African way; the collective effort, with a lot of talk, talk, talk...interesting to see:

here they were lifting two sections of pipe, each 15m long, and then screwing it into the pipe connector...like I said...many hands.

    Strong lads.....

As you can see, the average Ugandan RSM does not have much to complain about with the haircuts of his men.....

    EOD Practice

The Mines Advisory Group (MAG) have two EOD Techs here providing EOD training and mentoring to the Ugandan People's Defence Force (UPDF). Last Sat we went out with them for a range practice they were using to test EOD techniques & procedures. They were using ordnance that had been found around the airport base and stuff that had been collected in town.

Yes, the place has been subject to conflict over some time and, you can find munitions and skeletal remnants if you look hard enough or, even if you aren't looking:

The class stacked their AKs to one side. The UPDF soldiers are pretty sharp on weapon cleanliness:

This is Emmanual, a French man and one of the MAG Instructors. His ability to communicate in French is invaluable with the Burundian military; the other half of AMISOM. Here he is setting out the teaching aids:

and, Jim the Brit, ex RE Sapper. Jim and I have mates in common. The de-mining community is small:

Preparing the demolitions. The range is down on the beach, over the other side of the airport runway from where we live:

    and then...kaboom.

Better to get the stuff off the streets and dispose of it in a controlled manner.

MAG are a UK based non-profit organisation employing people around the world. I am on what they call, their 'Active List' and, funnily enough, in May 09 they had enquired as to whether I was available to come and work in Somalia.

    Thanks Andy,

    I did get it.

Last night I saw Somalians unloading drummed fuel from the top of tray trucks, the 200ltr drums were stacked end on end, 3 high and then, 2 drums deep on top of that, if you can picture that.

They were unloading from the top by simply dropping the drums onto truck tyres below, with men catching them as the bounced to stack them....only in Africa.
