I'm undecided as to whether he was the best or someone like Senna.

I usually think that Senna had better competition than what Shumacher had, but then again, maybe Schumacher was that much better.

Webber... well, I think that anybody that makes it into F1 is outstanding. But amongst those in F1... well, I think that rain is a great equaliser that allows a driver to shine. Actually, I really wish that Courtney kept a run in F1 because I suspect he is actually a better driver than Webber, but made some terminal errors at the wrong time. Thats a driver wasted in V8 Supercars.

do you rate webber slunnie? on the basis of wet weather driving showing a racers skill/ability, i guess you do. i am honestly suprised at the number that dont rate him. i know there isnt a right or wrong answer, its just a shock to me.

It's either called being an armchair critic or tall poppy syndrome, take ya pick!

Elite people in any field get there on talent, training and a whole bunch of other factors, but unless you are number one you are just another try hard in the eye of the masses. :wasntme:

Absolutely I rate Webber, but there are other drivers in F1 that I rate better. I tend to think at this stage that Webber isn't looking like he will shine in a championship, but I would have said exactly the same about Mika Hakkenin which at this stage of his F1 career was not unlike Webber, and didn't shine until he had something like 100GP starts under his belt and a Mclaran under his bum with a very well developed Illmor motor in the back of it. I guess this said, Mika was generally getting better results, and also that neither of them really shone at making their team develop cars, something that drivers like Shumacher and Senna were especially good at, and that in itself goes a long way to making a driver shine, something that isn't done in the race. Fortunately for Hakkinen Ron Dennis had a good car, but Williams who has a reputation for focussing more on the car and less on the driver in terms of resources didn't in my opinion have a good car or a good developmental team including Webber to have a serious go at the championship or constructors championship. Interestingly, Webber has had something around 120 GP starts and over that time has barely seen the podium, perhaps a 3rd when with Williams and once last year, so there isn't a great deal that makes me think that he will all of a sudden start winning GP's or start developing cars that are capable of winning championships irrespective of how much Flavio has faith in him, the skills of Newey and the engines of Renault (and formerly Ferrari). At the least, if he was going to shine he should have won the last GP rather than stuff it the way that he did. I know it sounds harsh, but being a champion is as much about finishing as it is having track speed and maintaining the car. Although he showed some flashes of brilliance in the wet, he also showed brain fade and a lack of consistency which is a quality that must be had. I've got no doubt that these are things that are easier to have when you are at the front, and it was interesting to see drivers like shucmacher, senna, prost etc, and even more locally change such as Skaife when they lost that comfort gained from a track speed to when they've really got to work at it - but... he has to sort that before he can lead. Someone who I think does this exceptionally well is actually Valentino Rossi - someone who I think is probably going to be one of the best drivers (albeit MotoGP) of all time across all motorsports - I know its a big call.

I'm with slunnie with the rossi point . he has won championships in all classes and with an undeveloped bike he won a championship ( yamaha ) . And i think rossi still has a couple of championships left in him too . to be honest as much as i love our aussie riders Rossi is the all time best GP rider and i can't see anyone topping his effort for a long time .
