Just caught up on all this.

****ing hell Dave, what to say?

I can't pretend to understand what you are going through but my missus has been having all sorts of similar problem s with work - they do the opposite of what she needs, and what she asks for by way of support and they are trying to boot her as well. It's so ****ing frustrating it's unbelievable, as you say.

I know very little about this stuff, but I do know the RSL has people who go in to bat for former service people with Veterans Affairs. Have you tried them?

It can be hit and miss.....

From my experience it only added to the trauma......

Finding an advocate not linked to the RSL or sub branches would be my advice.

as I said - broken , illogical, irrational.

Be very interesting to know who, or what agendas, or what criteria are applied, and why, to produce these absurdly cruel outcomes.

These systems that become final in their decision - not subject to appeal - seem to attract certain personalities to them I think.

Further to that - good individuals will do bad things when the system expects it of them. This is a well known phenomena especially in military (and similar) hierarchies. With that you then have 'good folk' participating in systemic abuse - it gets complicated. Can only be fixed from the outside then.

From the little I know it appears that Veterans Affairs seems to see its mission as representing the interests of the government (saving money), not the veterans. Is that right?

Yes and no.....no different to any other government organization.

1/2 the problem lays with ex member making claims for issues they don't have.

    Hi
And yet a RAAF sergeant in pay section gets a gold card for lung issues because he started smoking up there?
    Crazy!

    Cheers

That appears to be the general consensus among ex-ADF personnel I have spoken to.

I think to some extent it can come down to the individual inside DVA and whether they really want to push a particular case (one way or the other) or just let it go 'through the mill'...

Veterans' Affairs' failures exposed in Australian Public Service Commission Capability Review

... "This is somewhat ironic given the commitment of individual staff to their clients."
The department's culture came in for criticism too, with the reviewers finding it sapped the will of workers to do a good job for their clients.

"A siloed and rules-bound culture means that opportunities for improvement are lost, agility is forsaken, risks are exaggerated in the absence of a broader perspective, and motivation to support veterans and their families can be hard to sustain," the commission's team wrote.
The impression of a graduate working there:
Very siloed and inconsistent which impedes service delivered to the client.

My hearing is completely ****ed because of anti-armour fire, machine gun fire and working around helicopters , especially in ground run situations.
The handling of my claim by ADF and DVA personnel was done in a very professional and friendly manner and since 1990 I have been constantly updated and advised on my options, my medical situation has been constantly reviewed and changes to my pension and entitlements have been clearly explained.
I cannot fault DVA from my end.....so I can only say that as a veteran , DVA have been representing my interests very satisfactorily.

I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food
