Thanks, it would be good to meet youse blokes, too.

Our plans are now in disarray. The Forester is too high for the train ex-Sydney. Even if we borrowed our daughter's Forester (our old one) it is also 20mm too tall. We could drive to Adelaide and put it on there but if we did that we might as well take the Rangie.

We've looked at renting a car but the insurance excess is ridiculous and the daily rate to reduce the excess is about $25.

We may now go car-less to Perth, then fly back with Adelaide-Kangaroo Island being a future trip.

Does anyone need a car delivered cheaply (i.e., free) from Sydney to Perth in exchange for the use of it for 3 weeks? We could do a 4WD but we'd have to drive it to Adelaide.
    Ron,
Are they for real and does the height change in Adelaide? When I looked at doing similar a few years back was told the limit was 2.3m high from Perth to Adelaide. Have seen many 4x4s on the carriages as they passed through Kalgoorlie behind the Indian Pacific. Maybe drive to Adelaide and then load. Geez if a forrester can not fit on, not many cars would.
Possiblly try and speak to someone in the vehicle logistics department because I think someone is giving you a red herring. The other option may be to look at a car transporter, but usually east west is expensive or maybe on a freight train earlier?
What is the forresters roof line height? Couldnt be more than about 1.7m surely.
    Cheers

The height limit Syd-Adl is 1570mm. Tunnels in NSW - none between Adelaide and Darwin or Adelaide and Perth.

I measured our current Forester at 1710mm to the top of the ugly factory fitted and standard (otherwise they'd have been turfed!) roof bars. I used a piece of wood across the car and measured to the concrete floor.

Our old Forester which our daughter now drives is 1590mm - I'm told by Subaru. I have to measure it when she comes around next.

Nevertheless, Great Southern Railways have said they have had Foresters receive roof damage as they bounce in transit so they are no longer permitted to travel.

Strtaight from the website. You would think they would have a flat bed for 4x4 vehicles.
Seems they dont really want business.

Well, we are heading your way in a couple of weeks.

Arrive Perth 7th March, then straight to Cervantes and The Pinnacles on 7-8th.

Arrive New Norcia on the 9th March.

Then down to Albany (via Williams to annoy LandyAndy if he's not hiding. )

Andy are the pub or the motel at Williams OK? We may need to book.

At Albany we'll be meeting up with Pax and Wharfy from the Two Wheels forum.

West to Margaret River and up to Perth. Depart Perth Sunday 29th March so the Friday 27th or Saturday 28th would be a great time to meet the Perth blokes.

Full itinerary not yet worked out.

My 2IC from when I was Manager, Norfolk Island Cable Station, has asked if I want a part time job working for him on a project in Perth around that time.

    Hi Ron
You would be lucky to get the pub or hotel during the week.Usually booked out by miners/roadwork crews.
If you want,we could put our tent up in the backyard, unfortunately the house is TINY.Tent is a good size and we have camp beds that are quite comfortable.

Ron,The Grinch reckons she can fit the camp stretchers in the lounge, she says its not worth putting the tent up for 1 night.
Cross that bridge when the time comes, unless you bring rain the tent would be better I think.
