    sals rear discs

Well after going over all these great tips and pointers I made a mad dash over to the wreckers to see if the discovery still had its diffs. To my amazement it still had the front and rear, nothing was missing from underneath. I'm sure it was due to the small lake under and surrounding the truck.

Most of the tips I received made reference to the discovery front callipers / rotors being the better choice for my conversion. So I took the plunge literally and spent the afternoon swimming around under the truck removing the complete front diff and everything attached to it. I did surface once and a while for air It was actually a really good learning experience for me. Although not a big fan of water sports in one piece overalls. I thought I could kill two birds with one stone by grabbing the whole front diff, as some of you are aware I have been having some trouble with how the truck handles, loads of sway. So I wanted to do a front anti-sway bar set-up. My 130's front diff housing has no brackets to attach one and my chassis has no mounting brackets either but the 95 Discovery has both . So while removing the discos front diff I made sure to cut off the chassis mounts so I would have those brackets as well.
Here's a photo of it after I stopped off at the car wash and gave it a blast of degreaser

Now... Here I go again! Can I just swap the front rotors and calipers from my 130 and put them on to my newer sway bar equipped front diff and then use the Discovery Rotors and twin pot calipers on my rear sals diff. The disco front calipers are a bit smaller and also have ABS wiring on them but it should be Ok to just cut the wires off. Would I still need to get the rear caliper mounts or could I just use a set from one of the front diffs. I also should point out my truck is a right hand drive and the Discovery diff is for a left hand drive so here's a picture of the right side of the Disco's diff not sure what the proper name is for this steering mounting part of it is called but it's on the wrong side for my truck. is this a big problem.

Thanks to everyone for the great tips. Stopped me buying the wrong diff and saved me a pile of cash. I might be able to afford one of those crazy priced Australian Isuzu / LT95 gear box bell housings before I'm to old to drive

    Kind regards, Justin

    Justo,

The ABS D1 front swivel housings etc are no where near as strong etc as your County ones.

The reason is that they have less upper swivel bearing strength etc due to the invasive ABS sensor. They have a thrust needle roller bearing that is quite light duty, and compared to the early Defender and county railco type bushes and thrust washer(Which is in yours), is about 50% less I reckon. Plus, they have weaker CV's and drive members .
All is not lost though, You can use the housing with all its bracketry, but transpose all your internals and swivel housings etc over.
I am speaking from a purely long term perspective here, all the D1 components will do the job OK, but you will be introducing a small amount of 'less' strength here so I thought you had better know beforehand.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

    Hi JC

I was afraid of that. It seems you guys are determined to make me crack every nut and bolt on my truck! is this some form of Australian torture or is it the way you learn all your youngins

It was discussed in the 'Isuzu' section of this forum and Murray posted a photo of the components from an NPR truck (4BD1T). There might be further info on the 'Isuzu' parts of www.4btswaps.com.

Anyway, good luck with it, the 130 looks like a great unit for touring.

    Hi Matt

I couldn't agree more... when I pulled the the engine out of the Isuzu NPR I made sure to get the engine exaust brake. I just thought having the rear discs in addition to the exhaust set up would be the best of both worlds. I'm taking quite a trip when the truck is finnished plus having my Wife and kids on board means reliability and safety are a huge concern.
    Thanks for the complement!

    Cheers

    Hi Garry

It uses RR/disco stubs and rear calipers.

The biggest difference between it and my MA 1995 sals on the 130 that I can see is the RR/disco stub axle is attached with six M8 - 8.8 bolts whilst the 130 uses M10 bolts to attach the stubs. I wont be using the modded sals (with maxi flange) due to this load rating issue IMHO and instead will fab up an actuator bracket for my existing housing.

I guess in your case Justin, if you wanted rear discs, you could change the drum backing plate bracket to take the disco calipers and use then work out the clearances with the disco rotor/hub on the 130 stub... but rear disco brakes are pretty tiny? Disco twin pot fronts would be a better conversion one would think.

Go the exhaust brake, A long decline with DUGDUGDUGDUGDUGDUGGGGGH would be cool in a 130.

    Thanks Steve

I've taken your point and grabbed the front discs and calipers from the Discovery and your right about the exaust brake.
The DUGDUGDUGDUGDUGDUGGGGGH would be cool in a 130. It's going to be even cooler in my 130 Camper as we take it through some of the hair raising South American Andes Mountain passes! I grabbed all the parts from the Isuzu NPR truck that I removed the engine from. I'm looking forward to hearing it echo through the mountains.

    Thanks for your Help

Isn't there a Dana equivalent with discs that would be a simple mod and swab for the original unit?

    Hi dobbo

I don't have enough mechanical experience to know. It would however be nice not to have to import parts though $$$$$$. Would a Chev or Dodge truck with a heavy duty Dana rear diff be a possible match. Anyone know the answer to this. Its worth looking into. Thanks dobbo!
