Remember, if it's totally out of refrigerant the leak needs to be fixed before it's re-charged.
Where it is and how long that takes.....

A Tdi or TD5 with the Oz fitted AMC system IIRC only take 750 grams or so of R134A.
Current list price of R134A is approx. $45.45 incl. GST
If one of the drop in blends is used, eg 34M, these are around $70.70/kg but are slightly more efficient and you use slightly less per charge.
HC refrigerants as imported by ERG use even less per charge (approx half a charge of R134A) and are more efficient again.
Don't let whoever is fixing it charge too much more than this per kg, as they are making a damned good profit at that.

Budget for a receiver drier too (around $25 or so, but don't quote me on that ) if the system is totally out of refrigerant, plus O rings.

Hi, I paid $100 to have mine regassed with 134A in May last year in Arndell Park (Western Sydney). Mine wasn't due to any refrigerant leaks, but after a vehicle re-build.

You may have a leaking O ring - may need a leak test as well.

Get them to put UV dye in the system,if it leaks they will spot it easy rather than guessing.

Andy, you can leak test without a UV dye.

It's worth checking the aluminium lines and hoses first, my 130 rubbed through the ally line where it's saddled to the pedal box, hence loss of refrigerant. Due to TDI vibes I guess, likewise the power steer line saddled to the chassis below the radiator.

Thanks for the feedback guys - seems that in and around $100 is the price I'm looking at. As my previous posts indicate, I'm shopping around for a defender, and came across one at a decent price, but the aircon needs to be regassed.

Had mine regassed a month ago or so, $70 and they put the new hose on for me too.

I had a persistent problem with the top hose from the compressor to the firewall. It rubbed against the air filter housing and developed stress fractures at the join. Seems like it didn't help that the end of the hose was aluminium. Replaced it with a steel one.

Just adding that they guaranteed the job for 3 months, so I presume they did a thougher leak test.
