snapped the pointy end clean off it

    never seen such a thing...

auto elect reckons a backfire when starting would have caused it?

Never seen that but have seen the opposite on my brothers van where the ring gear broke around the bolt holes, and it would spin freely until it would catch in the correct spot and then it would start. It was surprising how long it went like this from when he first started having problems with it to when dad discovered the problem.

Yep. Chev on gas with a corroded center hole in the dist cap. Many moons ago, big backfire and then would not turn over.

Pulled the starter and found the whole alloy nose was shattered. New (US reco) starters for these are only about $130 from memory. Fitted one with a brace on the side and started fine, just had this strange click every rotation of the motor.

Years later when it was all apart and getting a flexplate I noted the old flywheel was missing 2 teeth.

    cheers, DL

I saw an old Cat grader run in reverse, the battery lacked enough charge to start it, but it fired on the rebound. Looked strange with dust billowing from the intake.
