I would not recommend making the "volcano" with damp sand as this could create steam explosion from the hot metal hitting it. A better Idea is to cut the top and bottom out of a tin can and use that instead.
I have done a few "lost foam" castings and I can not work out why the sand does not collapse down and destroy the pattern as the molten metal is poured in. The detail that can be created is amazing. I have used your normal packing foam as a pattern before and the metal part came out with the foam bead prints in it. Another trick is to cover your foam pattern in a very thin coat of drywall mud. Make sure it has dried before doing your pour.
I'd be more worried about him saying you can even leave soda in the cans. Molten Alluminium and water/fluids don't mix well at all, and even in his vid you can see mini explosions just from whats probably only a few drops of fluid left in the can.
Very dangerous indeed.
Sand castings have been used for many years, and still a major way to produce a component now.
If you have a late model Holden, the plenum (s?) chamber is made that way.
This is a series of 3-D epoxied flooring options available from Dubai based Imperial Interiors.
