I think you'll find the large white letters either side of the roundel are squadron identification letters whereas the aircraft identification numbers were smaller black numerals/lettering towards the tail and represented the military code for that aircraft only and not the country of registration. On a military aircraft the roundel (British) designates the country.
The roundel on this spitfire is the standard RAF roundel (yellow outline used on dark surfaces) 1942-45. (equivalent of a tac sign.)
