    Wright Brothers first powered flight

On December 17, 1903, two brothers from Dayton, Ohio, named Wilbur and Orville Wright, were successful in flying an airplane they built. Their powered aircraft flew for 12 seconds above the sand dunes of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, making them the first men to pilot a heavier-than-air machine that took off on its own power, remained under control, and sustained flight.

not true, the repeatability of controlled and sustained flight. this flight was just a fluke that they did not crash.

reason, they had a fixed tail. and wing warping, IE the wing was twisted to raise or lower that side of the aircraft. good in theory but during warping a wing it increased drag slowing that wing down, ie making the aircraft turn into that wing, in short it was uncontrollable.

they did not sort a solution until the following year with a movable tail. and the year after that when they would warp both wings at the same time producing about equal drag on both wings.

the Wright brothers stuck to there control system but never got it sorted. flexible wings were never going to work.

the real first controlled flight was by Alberto Santos-Dumont,

but Glenn Curtiss was the guy who really cracked it along with Sopwith
