I have 3 dogs already no room....Glad I live in Sydney
Having said that one day I'm planning on building a boarding Kennels![]()
Take her back to owners house with Sister in Law?
Have apprentice look after her at our house and take her for walks?
After some advice re the dog.
We are looking after my inlaws lab/kelpie Tess for a few months, while they are away in central OZ. She was well overweight when we got her 4 weeks ago (Try 27Kg) We've been told her ideal weight is around 22kg. We have since with some dieting and lot's of long runs/walks, she is now down to 25kg. But we now have a problem.
We are going for a 1 week snow trip in two weeks, my apprentice has offered to look after our house and dog.
Should we:
A ) Take the dog back to Geelong and leave her with sister in-law who is living at Tess's real home and has a lab, but she has said she will not have time to give her decent walks, or;
B ) Have my apprentice look after house and take her for lots of walks.
I'm more concerned that if we take Tess home she will get a bit too confused, about all the changes etc... She is quite timid, and took awhile to settle in here. I'm afraid that if we take her back to geelong bringing her back here for two months will upset her.
Any vets, people with experience etc...

Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......
Why don't you consult with the dog's owners.Did they appoint you as fitness consultants or just look after mydog as I do people.Maybe it's lost weight through anxiety about its future!![]()

First of all this is about what is best for the Dog and involves the least stress.
We've known both known Tess all her life (7years), and when I visit am usually the one who takes her for walks anyway, so its not just some stranger looking after someones dog. They have been trying to get the weight off for a long time, and said that they couldn't, and for us to have a go. She would barely be able to walk 2km before she would start limping, now can run for miles and I can't keep up. Her coat is no longer all greasy, and she seems very happy.
Food wise we give her dried food twice per day, 1/2 cup in morning and 1 cup at night. They used to give her 1 cup in morning and 1 1/2 at night, which seems a lot. Even big Labradors that I know of don't eat that much. She gets a serve of vegies every 2nd night and a bone every few days.
We've been talking with her parents and they thought to take her home, which i'm happy to do, but don't believe this to be the best course of action. They have left the decision up to me. Will ring a VET tomorrow.

Either way she is in for some change. I think if you can trust your apprentice with your house the dog should be ok specialy as he is offering to look after both. Leave clear instructions about the feeding and exercise and your apprentice should follow that to the letter. Sticking with the same routine and surroundings will be the minimum change.
I have had dogs for years and do not like to leave them at kennels even ones run by friends. The dogs always stress and come back with kennel cough even when vaccinated.
As a Vet, I would recommend back to her normal home with the sister-in-law. Less stress in the long run. You are only going for a week, all your good work won't be undone in that time. Better than leaving the dog with a stranger. Just imagine if she got away while on a walk, is she going to come back to the apprentice? Possibly not. Then it could be a trip to the pound or WORSE! Taking her home then bringing her back won't confuse her, dogs are more concerned with people than surroundings.
