Thread: Will rubber matting cause rust in my tool trailer?

Condensation formed between the rubber matting and trailer can only cause corrosion if allowed to contact unprotected steel. A coat or two of quality paint, properly applied will offer sufficient protection.

Yes of course it will if any moisture gets trapped under the matting. Sorry to disagree with Ian slightly but I have seen many instances where matting is layed on painted surfaces and left unchecked the paint blisters and rust forms.
You will need to take it out regularly or if water gets in and dry, no different to Defender floor mats really.
I would use the ribbed matting like I use on my shelves and is available from Bunnings for about $40 pm. As is is more like a mat any moisture has more of a chance of eveaporating or dispersing.
You can always try spraying the floor with Lanox or similar to trya and help dispers the moisture as well.

probably the best bet would be to get Rhino (or equivalent) sprayed on then it is bonded to the tray like in the back of utes and in horse floats

Thanks everyone, I thought it might. Rino spray is really good as I had it in my old ute but wont absorb the shocks like rubber.

Maybe time to come up with something better, it just came to me what about a woven rubber mat?

Hi Stu, camping stores sell rubbery mats with holes punched in them which would probably do what you want. Clark Rubber sell them as well.Often available in packs of four for about $20.I use them under my tents when camping and they keep the tent floor off the ground and help with ventilation so the condensation is reduced.They are reasonably tough so should last quite well. They can be cut with a Stanley knife to fit them in position and most have interlocking edges so they can be joined.Cheers, 130man.

Further to my previous post the mats are 60 cms square and about 10 mm thick and very light. I have a heap of them and use them for padding anything that needs protection.

I am thinking of putting a solid rubber mat in my tool trailer just to protect my tools when travelling along from bouncing around even small amount of bouncing can and has caused damage to tools in the past.
