Wild LR pricing variations for similar bolts

It's only a small thing, but it made me roll my eyes a lot.

I ordered 6 bolts to replace the rusty ones on my bonnet. 50 cents each. Not too bad.

8 bolts to replace the rusy door hinge bolts. $2.90 each

The door hinge bolts are probably 2mm thicker than the bonnet ones. How they go from $0.50 to $2.90 each is beyond me....

Years ago I bought a number of 'fir tree' fasteners for the door lining - Defender ones $0.45ea, Disco ones $4.50ea. Bought them anyway as I had to complete the job on a mates Disco.
However, I didn't leave it at that. I wrote a letter direct to Rover Australia querying their pricing for similar items (also included my receipt from the dealer) and suggested that they may have misplaced the decimal point. I received a thankyou letter PLUS a refund for the overcharged amount of $40.50 even though I hadn't requested any adjustment.
    Good PR for a change!

Wait till you need to replace the sump plug washer on the auto transmission. The washer - yep that's the flat metal ring - was $8 when I bought it many years ago.

    Hehe!

In all fairness, it's probably much cheaper these days....

    Many years ago,

When I was a poor 18 year student.... I did a cam replacement in a ford 1600 in my mkII Cortina.

All was good until I discovered I needed 8 new cam followers.... and the bloke at the ford dealer told me they were going to cost me $20 each. ( that was close to the total I had budgeted for the job!)

Anyway... a bloke that worked with my old man used to race Capri's.... he told me the part number for the Capri 1600 cam follower.. I took that back to the same ford dealer.....

    They were $4 each

We checked them with a micrometer... they were the same bloody part.... just different numbers for the two cars!

So totally illogical parts pricing has been around for a while...

I have to say I'd be far happier paying $2.90 for a bolt in 2009 that I was to pay $20 for 1 cam follower back in 1980...

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most

2015 TDV6 D4.... the latest project... Llams, Traxide, Icom 455, Tuffant Kimberleys and Mofos.... so far.
2012 SDV6 SE D4 with some stuff... gone...
    2003 D2a TD5...gone...
    2000 D2 V8...gone...

hi, i was reading lrm last month and it kinda stated that disco was inflated to compete as a middle of the roader to defender and range rover (how dare they insinuate defender isn't the of the top marques!!!) so in effect better comfort spec and daily drive-ability than defender but not as plush as range rover. i guess that must be the same for parts

Yeah - I can imagine. Wouldn't mind emigrating for a year or two and stock up on parts to bring back here.

I found some Stainless ones on ebay.uk that were quite reasonable, but I'd rather not have the SS as I've read about galvanic corrosion with the alloy. Sticking with the genuine parts for this job.

Hmmm - well the car is 4 years old, so more than once in a lifetime. Perhaps I won't care in another 4 years.....
