Well it seems like only yesterday that I fell asleep on the couch and woke up to see the horror of 9/11...."Shockin me right outta my brain" (Sorry it's a 70's thing)
I work in the aviation industry so it was a little too close to home. I see all the footage, documentaries, conspiracy theorys and so on....can't really say much other than it was a horrible day for mankind.
So what were you doing when the towers got slammed?

I remember the night quite well , we were actually house sitting for some friends that had gone overseas to the States.
I finished doing an afternoon shift at around 23:00 , got the train to my destination and got picked up from the train station. when we got to the house my partner told me she was tired and she was going straight to Bed , Thought it would be a good way to unwind for a while before going to sleep , so I sat in front of the Telli switched it on and 911 must have just happended , breaking news , They kep showing planes smashing into the twin towers over and over and over . yes America has been attacked. so I sat there for a while wondering .
why????
I was moving house and it took much longer than it should have. The telly was the last thing packed. Those images were mind searing.
I was holidaying on the Gold Coast along with my wife, kids and parents.
Dad turned on the tele in the morning and there it was. Very surreal for a start - like someone was doing an action movie thing.
Diverting slightly, the Ansett collapse was either the day before or the day after, and I remember spending almost a whole day lying on the floor of the hotel room pressing redial trying to get thru to Qantas to book a flight back to Melbourne.
Steve
i got home late after having some drinks, turned the TV on and seen the footage of the planes crashing onto the building............thought it was a pretty average movie as it had voice overs........off i went to sleep
little did i know that it wasn't a movie
On Monday the 10th I was a truck driver, and the 11th was the day I finally went into an office, after years of farming etc...
I had never used computers.
I remember doing the tour(?), then sitting at my desk and my colleague flicking onto a news feed on his pc. We couldn't believe what was happening.
I remembered the Lockerbie bombing so well as this was next to a main England to Scotland route, and 9/11 seemed to be a continuation of that....
Watching the documentaries this week, it is all so chilling....
I worked for bp at the time, and I recall having a guy roll in with a camper,. He filled it with fuel then filled some jerry cans, some mower cans, and drums, loaded it all in,
rushed in,. paid in cash,. Brought some papers, batteries, and a **** load of food at servo prices!, said the **** was about to hit the fan and he wasn’t going to be around when it does,..
Said if I had any sense I should be heading inland on an extended camping trip…
I some times wonder if he is still out there hiding from the ww3 he must have thought was coming… I ½ expect to find him every time I go off roading..
Also... I think Osama is hideing in Aus,...
Its a little closer to home for me.
if it was 9/13 i wouldnt be here.
I was booked on the Boston flight for the thursday, they put the tuesday plane (9/11) into the tower.
two days my mum thought i was dead.
wife preggo with our little one and I didnt know
week business trip added another 16 or so days days
sitting in a conference that had just resumed after break when guy comes in white sticken with fear "two planes in world trade centre, one in pentagon they going to shoot down another" 15 aussies and kiwis scientists think " ok a catholic, jew and protestant walk into a pub" then we realise " hang on we are in the US, yanks have no sense of humor, this guy is for real"
every building over two storeys evacuated
immediately after it was absolute and utter panic and kaos and it was that way for most of that day.
we were wisked away to a shopping centre (massive factory outlet type) place about 100 miles east of Boston to "forget" it was closed and blocked off by police been evacuated, thats when i though, "holy crap what has happened today"
it "calmed down" a couple of days later
basically under house arrest, thats actually unfair we were allowed to go anywhere, we just couldnt go anywhere.
you couldnt not watch it, we reckon we sat for the first 50 odd hours and didnt move from in front of the tellie, you couldnt move, your body wouldnt let you
14 odd days later flight resumed. i honestly dont remember the date
second flight out of Boston
for six hours lady my mums age next to me cried from time we left Boston to time we landed in San fran
you didnt go to the front of the plane for the dunny, you even hinted of moving forward and 20 people go up to beat the crap out of you, you went to the back of the plane
we actually practiced drills (business group of scientists about 15 aussies and kiwis) for taking down anyone if it happened with our plane. we all had assigned roles
First flight out of San fran
6 mercindol and 6 normasin had no effect on flight home
was at the olympic stadium for british and irish lions v wallabies with 110 thou people, nothing compared to noise when plane landed Sydney Kingsford Smith.
I see it every day in a 7yo who quite possible could have never known her dad and I would have been none the wiser.
i still cant look at that footage without howling like a 2yo, even typing this im going to have to stop soon.
you want to know what having the bejesus frightened out of you
I still have the Boston news papers in my filing cabinet for the morning after from our hotel.
its been eight years alright
it was a little to close for Ian as it was a united plan that went through the building. It really upsets him and finds it hard to watch stuff about it. (for those of you that dont know Ian is an aircraft mechanic for untied airlines and was working for them in the UK when this happened)![]()
