Good points John, but do you think he would have been awarded the prize if he had either failed in his presidential bid or never ran for presidency?

I don't think you can remove the fact of his status from the decision to award him the prize.

    Nobel for left-wing rethoric

I agree with you mate, if every lefty received a Nobel price for wishing well I reckon we'd see many many more! Obama shares Rudd's left-wing rethoric with his typical socialist hypocrisy made up by fancy words, little substance and conflicting action...Ask yourself a question: in what way does keeping a fighting force in Afghanistan qualify a president for a peace prize?

No, you are right, in the sense that it is only his status as president that allows, for example, his stance on nuclear weapons, to have any impact. Without his being elected, his views on this (or anything else) as a senator would be insignificant compared to their influence as president.

But this does still not make the comments about the US role as a superpower or its past foreign policy relevant, except as background to the present award. Although I suspect that the relative change from the previous administration's attitude may have a lot to do with the award, so in that respect they may be relevant, but not as stated.

but did you know what he done before hand that may well of qualified him for a nomination?....I don't actually know specifics but I'm lead to believe that he was very proactive probably one of the reason that helped get him the presidency...

I think obama is probably at this point one of the best things that has happened to the states in a long time...

there is talk of Americans not wanting to leave and other countrys having poverty in this thread...American has its fair share of poor. sick and poverish people...which makes it even more embarrassing I feel for a country that is supposed to be a super power...something I think obama is trying to rectify.
And a lot of Americans wouldn't leave the states as many dont realise whats outside there country walls...I believe they are a very shelter country evident by the way they get there News, often aren't informed about anything other than what goes on in America.
I have a few American friends and its amazing to see what their views are on their country and there past president once they have been outside there country boundries and looked in. expeirencing life beyond the only safe and secure country that exists.

i doint know how to say this, but basically most of the previous posts are so Naive that its embarrassing to read.

the would is so much bigger than A and Iran. both are small chips compared to what else is going on.

Obama is credited in preventing to date a 3rd world war. but as this ongoing problem is still not totally resolved i thing getting the nobel peace award is a bit premature.

now before you decide to flame me. do some reading first! or at least doint expect me to educate you because you are to lazy to keep yourself up with world current and historical afars.

Just shows what and absolute farce the Nobel Peace Prize is.
OK he has made some statements and voiced some intentions, but has yet to actually do anything even veguelly worthy of the peace prize. If he had been true to his word he would have refused it as he must be more than aware he has not yet achieved anything. Shows me he is a hypocrit.
Too much hype and brown nosing by the committee.
