Most are complaining about the 200 here as well. Other than mentioned issues they are so heavy with after market bars, Long range tanks and a roof rack it's not legal to take the wife with you.

but 25+ is common per 20000k service.
Cummins clame 20lt is accepable, over that they rebuild under warranty.
The cat c15 i drive has 910000km and has not had an extra drop
put in between services in its life.

Both. You have to understand that this is an inverted engine - the lubrication to the rockers is via oil mist down the pushrod tubes - but there is no provision for return of the oil, just each rocker box has a 1/4" pipe through it up to the level of the rocker shaft, with the other end open, so when the rocker box is full to this level, any excess oil just runs out.

But apart from that they all seem to leak oil everywhere (probably because as a result of making a big engine as light as possible, everything has a bit of spring so gaskets don't stay sealed), and also burn a lot. When starting from cold you have to turn the engine past four compressions to make sure there is not enough oil in any cylinder to cause hydraulic lock. Typically, when first starting after standing for a few days, you have to wait for thirty seconds prior to starting taxiing until visibility improves sufficiently.

The way the oil system works is that there is a large tank behind the engine, and as it is below the crankcase, oil drains into it by gravity (the cylinders stick up into the crankcase), with the oil pump fed from the tank.

Mind you there was once a 1948 model Jag in the family which consumed oil at a prodigous rate and would lay a smoke screen worthy of a Centurion Tank... it finally did settle down oil -wise at around 80,000 miles ...apparently Jag used diamond hones to finish the bores in those days and with chromed oil rings it took forever to bed in...
There's a good point, when I bought my Defender mobile 1 was the oil they used and mine used to go through a sump full every 10k.I changed to Penrite HPR and it settled down.Back then owners were told to give the engine some and not to pussy foot around running them in. Pat

    And..........sounds good to me

How many TD5's do you see people complaining about oil consumption,& they came from the factory with fully synthetic oil in the engine, many had their 1st service at 20k.

    NONE

I have had 3 of them & not one has ever used a drop.

And many of these engines have high mileage on them & have been around for 10yrs.

Also the injectors, very few problems as well.

    Quality design & built properly.

Any one see the article in i think Overlander mag, about towing test with a 79 series TDV8,wouldnt pull the skin off a rice pudding
