Thread: My Bonnie went from running great to rubbish while I stopped for a coffee.

I think everybody's advice makes good sense.

The tank of fuel I used was from a previous ride and the bike went great. The probs did not occur after a fill up. Since getting the bike worked on Ive used nothing but BP Hi-octane. This was the firm advice I got from the mechanic. I have to say while I agree it makes sense, I have my doubts about whether my bike likes the taste of it. Ive had bad experiences in the past with it but as I keep saying it has been running beautifully on it for the last two tanks full.

Inside the tank Ive also got some ball bearing things in a cage that corrode and help replace lead. A Brit bike mechanic suggested them. Theyve been in there for a few years. Maybe they've got something to do with it.

Ashman I daresay my bike is very similar to your 79. Mine has the electronic ignition, 5 gears but no electric start (ugly modern device and work of the devil). PS I like Norton Commandos very much. Beautiful bikes, Only the seventies Italians come close in beauty. The plugs are new but I don't know what brand, can't say Ive noticed my bike caring too much. I'll look at them but if they are oily is it the cause or another symptom of my problem?

George, the thing about flooding on the second jet is that it is not indicated by the ability for it to rev right out at idle is it??

El Dude, my bike has been incredibly reliable in the face of rare use. It starts second kick at the latest after weeks, and just takes off and goes (well, took off and went). I rode it for a good few months after I pranged the Defender and it never let me down. As you say when things go wrong, it's generally simple - it's just that I'm no spanner man.

I'm going to have a look at the carbies; clean and check what I can. If that and a proper check through the leads, maybe fresh fuel and if that doesn't sort it out, I'll take if back to The Committee out the back of the bike shop.

At least with all your advice I'll be prepared for a chat with the mechanic.

    thanks everyone.

Next time you go there ... When you looking at their front door, Twist your head to the right, and you will see a RRC parked up ... Look up, drop in & have a chat with me.

Does your model Triumph have a "Zener" (spelling) Diode up on the fork clamps below the headlight. Looks like an oval shaped thingy with fins radiating out (cooling fins), if so check the wire that clips to the back of it. Because as the forks get turned this diode moves with it and it can cause the wire to break in side the insulation and give you the sort of symptoms you describe, pull the clip and check the wire back some distance to make sure there isn't a break inside the insulation or the clip, good luck, Regards Frank.

Yes Frank I know the thing you mean. I'll check that too. Thanks. J

UPDATE: Actually, I think my bike doesn't have that, I may be recalling it on a friends older bike. I'll check it, if it's there to check.

Ill check the plugs again. Make sure they are the right ones for the bike. I had the same problem with my CBR900... bought the wrong plugs (cool ones I think) and they became problematic after a few rides. Same with you, any throttle agression (more fuel in) meant sputtering and cutting out etc.

So, check the plugs again and make sure they are the right ones
