    Material for overhead console ?

What do people think (if you can speak from experience all the better!) would be the best material for a roof console ?

Ideally it should be waterproof / resistant becauseits in a Defender and there''s a small hole in the roof which water sometimes seems to find its way into.

Anyway would Marine Ply be best, and if so what thickness?

Presumably best way to assemble is glue and screw. Can you screw into the "end grain" (if you follow) of plywood ?
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

    G'day

If you are handy with timber ply is the way to go. Depending on the span and supports 10mm would be ample. If screwing into end grain pre drill it will stop splitting. Normal ply (structural) will be fine as marine ply is for boat building. There is no difference in the glue between the two ply's, the timber used in marine ply is the difference, there is no floors in marine ply as extreme strength is required of boat building.

    Happy building.

    Regards

I would use a combination of folded aluminium sheet and waterproofed 3 or 5mm ply, all covered in front-runner.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

What about making a mould out of ply and then using fibreglass? That's what the "Rono" consoles are made out of, and I imagine they would be strong and very light.

Anyway, I'd be keen to aid and abet, as I'm still keen to do the same in mine.

Really i thought marine ply was "more waterproof" than normal structural ply ?

Folding alloy a bit of a PITA and beyond me at the moment _ i'll stick with wood methiinks.

Fibreglass ! Get bent. if I wanted fibreglass I'd get a Corvette.
(Real reason is I've done some fibreglassing before and it cut me up and nearly killed me with fumes and I hate the bloody stufff!)

Biggest problem is working out how to attach the console to the roof !

(I have removed the hoodlining pernanently and can see the ribs, but obviously will need to have some sort of upper structure in teh console to screw to these ribs.)

If this is for a Defender then you want a 'factory' looking overhead console.

Therefore, sheet metal & rivets will do nicely .

    Yes as Phantum said.

Both marine and structural ply use Resorcinol glue.

Always thought a offcut of 6 or 8"" c purlin cut to shape painted or with covering glued on might work (galv.) Bolt to roof frame.Job #3678 on to do list
