Peugeot is almost the only option for a diesel small/medium car for that price range.. Citroen (reliability?) and Holden Astra/Vectra also did diesel but aren't many around. May be able to find a MkIV VW Golf oil burner in that price bracket as well if you're lucky.

If it was up to me I would go a Peugeot 406 or 306 diesel, best suits open road driving, good reliability and not boring to drive. Super frugal as well. Maybe do a bit of time looking around aussiefrogs.com if you want to research it more.

You've been behind me on the open road too - Tdi + auto = bad spread of ratios and undeniably slow.

Would it have happened in my ex 1HDT Toyo? No. Its time truth was spoken, Japanese is Lord.
what you need to do is put a defender transfer case in the jigger . or make it manual

True. I'm keeping my Disco because its [now] an ideal, faultless vehicle. All they need is a bit more under the bonnet.

But I'd rather spend another 4l/100km to have hill flattening torque

For starters remove the centre muffler . the turbo should spool up a little quicker . you could also up grade the intercooler or even get the turbo tweeked a little
