Suggestions wanted for new daily driver!

    gday everyone,
im currently on the hunt for a new car, well not new but something a bit more practical and reliable than my D1 v8

dont get me wrong, i love my disco, but i might be travelling to melbourne for work and to see friends etc (i currently live in Ballarat, VIC), and i need something that is more comfortable than my disco, its getting on a bit and needs a fair tidy up, and also i dont want to be without a car if i damage it off road

i am planning on spending somewhere in the range of $10-12000 all up

i am looking for something with the following criteria:
    - must be economical (sub 10l/100km on highway)
    - must not be a commodore or falcon
    - must have a manual transmission, i cannot stand autos
    - must not be 'girly' so no hyundai's, daewoo's etc

i have had my eyes on an 00-02 Subaru Liberty RX
but would like some feedback with suggestions for other vehicles to look at or consider, any first hand experience would be valued also

i have thought about a D2 (diesel) to dedicate totally as a daily driver and focus on my D1 for off roading, but i am hesitant due to reliability concerns and also considering i am currently looking for permanent work, it doesnt seem like a wise decision, especially since i am fed up with spending money on my current disco

Not that their my cup of tea.Look into Pug turbo diesels of the same vintage.Extremely good fuel economy and quite nice to drive.
People who own them are as passionate as Landy pilots.
Make sure you keep that D1!!!!

i was going to say a toyota aurion, but then i read that you hate autos, pretty sure that they only come with an auto transmission.

i reckon the liberty aswell then.

If you buy a D2 td5 and just use it for daily driving and you're not giving it a hard time offroad i don't see why it would be any less reliable than buying a subaru. Don't get me wrong, i quite like the subaru's and i am yet to hear anything too bad about them, but i know personally, i would much prefer another landy and the D2 would be more comfortable and practical. You can get heaps of gear in it (when i'm using mine around town i get all sorts of stuff in it and it is one of the best parts about owning it, going from my 3 series bmw to it has really made me realise how good it can be!) and you could also even sleep in it a night if need be! i.e late decisions to stay at mates parties?

Also there's nothing wrong with an auto, sure they might take a little to get used to but they are great in and around town, after owning heaps of manuals and going to an auto then back to a manual i realise how much i love the auto!

Anyway thats just my 2 cents...
    Cheers,
    Shamo

my disco was originally an auto, but it packed it in and i converted it to manual, i realise that if i was looking for a manual D2 the odds are against me, i might have to give an auto td5 a test drive

not sure if it will come in under my budget though

It would be hard to go past a Freelander.

I laugh Ha!Ha! when I see people say that Discos and Freelanders would be as reliable as a Subaru.
Doesn't anyone read JD Power from any year and the recent Warranty Assurance report from UK?
Well here is the news. Land Rover products are consistent. Consistently near last in reliability while Jap cars are consistently top.. Now I know that the latest Freelander has at last got a good score but the man is talking 10K or so cars.
If you want relaibility buy a JAPANESE car. A Subaru, Honda Accord maybe, or a Suzuki , or a Nissan Pulsar, or probably IMHO the best to drive a Mazda 3. You can get them in the budget and they are quite good and RELIABLE..
    Regards Philip A
