One I didn't mention as you only want sub 10Lper 100 Km is a Honda Jazz.

I just put my money where my mouth is and bought a black 2006 Vti 1.5Vtec for $11300, which I am told is a good price.

0-100Kmh in 9.4, and less than 5l 100Km on the highway. Top about 195Kmh. First tank including running around 6.9L per100Km . Second tank so far just running around with air on 7.4. redline 6500RPM.

Hill climbing is great and able to hold speed on any F3 hill including Moonie Moonie as long as you do not have 4 people on board. AND it is really quiet on the expressway.

I LOVE it except the black . The tiny thoughtful things that Honda put in like a pen clip in the glovebox, the "Magic " seats, and FAR more room than the Getz, Micra, Mazda 2, Ford Fiesta. The gear change is ace and commented on by all drivers. And it is pretty simple but just really well designed. It has an accelerator CABLE,
Not for nothing was it top selling car in Japan for 3 years and car of the year etc etc . And the motor is such a jewel. It is also the honda 90Hp outboard.LOL.
On the negative side there is not much happening under 2K revs.

Just an update on what i bought:

    Its a '99 MY00 Subaru Liberty RX
We flew to Sydney on the wednesday ($39 flights), got a hire car (never get a car from rent-a-bomb in mascot!!!) this thing was held together with sikaflex, anyway we checked the car out that afternoon,
picked it up on thursday, checked out the sights on friday, and headed back to Melbourne on friday night

we drove back via the east coast, choosing the longer scenic route over the hume freeway

stopped at woolongong (was greeted by a feral with rotten teeth trying to fleece me out of $10, the only thing crime-wise we encountered for the whole trip), nowra, and batemans bay and stayed in merimbula overnight, then the next morning headed off to cann river, orbost, traralgon and then all the way back to avalon airport to pick up the gf's car

it was a great drive, the car is suited to the windy roads of the scenic trip, the AWD system makes it alot more comfortable to drive, and fantastic in the wet, very comfortable seats, cant say enough about it

fuel economy for the first tank with a mix of sydney driving and highway was 9.6L/100km, and for the next tank which was all highway and cruise control was 7.9L/100km which was a surprise (all of this with the a/c on)

in the past month that i have had it, with a mix of driving around ballarat with a trip to melbourne once or twice a week (110km each way) ive been getting a consistent 8.5-9L/100km im very pleased with those figures

it was advertised for $7500, i got it for $7000
