Go buy yourself a 14 foot sheet of colorbond, fold at ends to form the ends, seal with silicon. You now have a cheap canoe.
    cheers

Banjo, ask your question on the Woodenboat forum. It's an American site but there are quite a few Aussies and kiwis there.

What they can't tell you about building a canoe isn't worth knowing.

Just make the landy roof detachable, then it can serve both purposes...

You may need a bilge pump though!

Just watch out for some of the more curmudgeony old sods. Don't let them put you off, but if you have any problems let me know. I've taken some of them on before.

The cheapest way I see it is to find yourself the right size tree and make a dugout canoe - would be one of the hardest ways of doing it. If the natives could do it with stone implements I am sure you could with modern tools.

I agree with some of the others that second hand fibreglass or plastic canoes are cheap to buy - not even expensive new.

Also I believe there are scout groups in the Newcastle area that built their own canoes (no sure which ones) and maybe you can borrow their moulds. In my younger days I build a number of 16' canadian canoes - fibreglass was easy and cheap - the wood trim was more expensive and time consuming. Also built a plywood canoe - awful thing - designs are not good as the glass ones and even though all seams were correctly glued and fibreglass tape sealed they still leaked a bit after a bit of rough handling.

For you $300 I think you could find something second hand if you were not choosy - but if you are interested in the building side as a 'fun' activity in itself, then I would look at building a larger fibreglass canadian - great on the lake and you can put a small motor on the back if you wanted. There is nothing worse than being out in the middle of Lake Macquarie with the wind and waves coming up and needing to get home quick.
