Another vote for memory map. Ive been using it from the very early days in the UK & Europe and now over here.
Many of the "bad reviews" you read are as a result of people a) using the old software which was a bit buggy and had a wiered pricing structure and b) people not reading instructions!
The latest software works flawlessly across the PC, ipad, iphone.
I can also confirm that the Australian Memory Map support guys are first class.
I wouldnt use anything else now.

Jon
Thanks for the replies. Looks like I need to download the map on my PC then sync it across to my ipad - no Biggy, but I don't have the energy to do that right now - my PC is buried deep in paperwork...
This was what some of the negative feedback was about by the looks of it, but no dramas for me.

You need to get the map on the pc and either extract a portion of a map within memory-map to the hard disk or identify the whole map filename on the pc.
Once you have your map, with the iPad connected to iTunes, simply drag and drop the map file into the memory map "App section" in iTunes.
Likewise with waypoints and routes or tracks that you create on the pc, save them as GPX files though (not mmo cos they don't work!!) and drag them over to the "App section" in iTunes too.
Then once you run memory map on the iPad the maps and tracks you sync'd in iTunes will be available.
Sounds really complicated but after you've done it once its easy and straight forward.

I have been using Memory-Map for a cpl of years now and find it an excellent product. The NSW Toppo's are great, even showing fire trails etc in the Wattagans near Newcastle.
While I use it on PC, netbook and a Win phone, my son has it on his iPad and I was very impressed with it on the ipad.
We overshot the start of the Frenchmans Track (not hard to do) recently and with the iPad we were able to see that it was only a cpl of hundred metres away.
Memory-Map has the advantage of being able to be used in marine and air navigation as well.
You can also add your own maps to Memory-Map if you go for the upgrade instead of the free software. It's good in that you can print your maps too.
The free Memory-Map software is all you need. If you have an internet connection to your prefered device you can also download from Memory-Map the map/charts for your current location.
The maps/charts are cheaper if you subscribe online and then download what you need rather than buy the discs.
Cheers, Rick.
This isn't a novel application i know but a for a recent 4 day trip into and around the Wonnangatta Valley i purloined the hand brake's retired iPhone 4 and installed AVENSIS PDF MAPS App on it then downloaded HEMA's High Country West Map to it. Now! I am a Garmin owner and i was very dubious about the sensitivity of the GPS receiver in the iPhone (and with no SIM CARD installed!) but have to say it was truly brilliant - and that's not a reference to the detailed yet small display. Resting in a windscreen mount it never once lost reception or strayed off the track because of poor reception. I have now adopted it as my new dedicated moving map appliance and use it to compliment the hard copy version of the same map which IMHO are indispensable. All GeoVic Topo Maps have been geo referenced for some time now and i use them as well. Years ago I used a PDA map application in the same way for position finding but the iPhone's performance is far superior.

Pdfmaps is great. If it had ability to load routes it would be brilliant.
There are some great maps available. Meridian Maps sell their Wombat SF, Otways and Victorian Deserts maps in the map shop.
The PDF VicMaps are great but it's an expensive way to buy mapping for a large area. The flipside is that it's the most uptodate mapping you buy for Victoria.

Maybe I'm just a bick thick with all this stuff, but I have yet another problem. As I only have the Wifi Ipad, I have bought an external GPS unit for it. After a bit of research, I went for the GNS 5870 MFI unit - GPS BT: GNS - Global Navigation Systems
Now the issue - it connects to the Ipad no dramas - within 2 seconds of turing it on - it is very fast. It also aquires the GPS signal quickly. BUT - Memory Maps doesn't seem to recognise it!!!Memory maps seems to only want to use the standard location service the wifi ipad offers, so is quite vauge about where you are.
Does anyone know a way of getting memory maps (or the ipad in general) to use the GPS signal from the GNS 5870 instead? Everything I have found on line says it just works, but this is clearly not the case.
