    D4 In-Car Navigation System

    Hi Everyone,

I have had my new D4 HSE for a grand total of 4 days. Yes, I have a permagrin but no I don't know how to post photos...yet. Any advice would be gratefully accepted.

However my concern in this thread is the in-car nav system. Is it me or are other people also underwhelmed by this system? I have used it several times and it seems to me to as technologically advanced now as where Tom Tom and others were about 3 years ago.

I have played with the in-car nav system and the voice guidance does not recite street names, it does not display school zones, fixed red-light cameras and nor does it display speed limits. These features are fairly basic to even the cheapest Tom Tom, Navman, Garmin etc nowadays. I may have not set it up correctly and is so I would be grateful for advice.

Am I whinging for no reason? Are my expectations too high? Are there any improvements in sight?

    Cheers

    George

Not at all, this is one of the very few down sides to the LRs.

The sat nav is a joke and I suspect it is only here in Australia that these features are not available.

My 08 RR has the same set up and the yanks have access to the features you have posted about and the one that gets right up my nose big time, is the fact that you can not enter addresses while on the move.

This feature can be activated overseas but not here.

I honestly consider the sat nav in these vehicles is just not worth the additional cost, especially as you have pointed out, a $200 off the shelf system does heaps more.

BTW, wait till you go to buy an update for your maps. Be seated when they tell you the price.

    Hi George,

No you have good reason to complain considering the price of OEM Satnavs.

Bad news however. There may well be some features you've not found yet but I can say for sure that there is not a OEM system on the the market by any manufacturer which can compete with the features on a $300 portable.

It's not only features which are missing but the routing algorithms are usually atrocious and addresses can't be entered on the move. For reasons of liability OEM satnavs are programmed for the lowest common denominator of driver and I don't think that's likely to change. For anyone with an interest in GPS & driving they just don't cut it. To add insult to injury when you need to upgrade the map DVD it will cost around $300 a time. Do yourself a favour up front and buy a portable for the windscreen.

    Hi P38ace,

Fortunately I didn't pay for mine as it came with the car being a Demo model.....so it seems great for me....since it was free, LOL!!! Probably this feeling is helped by the fact that I've never owned one before.

On a serious note however, are you aware when the latest update for the GPS was available? I have a 2009 D4.....built September, came to Oz in October.

Also, do you get the disc from LR or the Whereis people?

    Cheers,

    Kev.

On the 2010 models, isn't the software is on the car's hard-drive? Meaning there is no DVD update - the dealer has to update the hard-drive.

    Cheers,

    Gordon

    Hi Celtoid,

If you have a DVD system then buy from Whereis as it's likely to be cheaper than a LR dealer. Version 16 is current and can be found here

Whereis® | Buy Map Updates | Land Rover - Sensis

I'm not that familiar with the D4 or 2010 models but I believe a map update may be a dealer only hard drive upgrade over IDS/SDD as suggested above.

If so I'm sure it won't be cheap and the portable device is still a better option !

The factory system will get you to a destination but will usually route the long way round using major highways. Try it out on some routes you know well.

    Thanks P38ace and Gordon.

I don't have a DVD player in mine, just has audio selections. I got told by the dealer I bought the car from in Cairns that it was a HD download and yet my local who has serviced the car recons it's a disc....

    Very frustrating.

Might have to be more specific in my questions.

OK, after a little research here's the D4 specifics.

Map information stored on a hard-drive located within the TSD (touch screen display) is used to determine the best route for the journey and provide the driver with details of directions and approaching junctions.

If the vehicle requires a map upgrade or a new region loading, an enabling code along with the map data must be purchased. Map upgrades to the hard-drive unit need to be carried out by a Land Rover dealer using Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment.

Thanks mate....doesn't give you much faith in the local LR dealership does it?

I'll take it up with them, next time I'm in.

If by 'local' you mean Brisbane, then personally I lost all faith in them about 15 years ago and they've not improved any from what I read here.

Bit of a drive, but I go to the Gold Coast for service.
