D4 has now got a Steinbauer!

    Well I finally got my D4 fitted with a Steinbauer powerchip and my impression are;

On the drive home, it must admit I was a little disappointed with the results. Throttle was smooth but lacked that extra power. So when I got home, I had a look at how much they turned the dial for turn at it was set to normal. So I decided to turn it right up, and boy the car came alive!

The great thing about this chip is you can drive the car normal like it wasnt there...until you plant your foot, bang she goes from a house cat to a lion! I believe the chip is design this way as it only gives you the power under load.

The power in the D4 3L drops off quick after take off, however now it holds it all the way to 4000rpm. Overall the throttle response is sharper and the power is increase and holds longer especially in and out of a corner.

My fuel consumption is sitting at 10L/100kms but I have only done 100kms since yesterday, so I will be able to tell if anything has improved over a few weeks.

My biggest gripe is with United Fuel Injections as the service was woeful! Real redneck, unprofessional, forgetful and not very good at phone manners.

EG> They told me the could dyno the car, but when I picked it up they said because its a auto you can't get a proper dyno read.

I have a few performance cars dyno before, its never been a problem which was autos. I dont image a 4WD would be much different if put on a proper dyno.

Does anyone know and recommend a dyno place for 4WD's?

    Cheers

I would worry less about the Dyno and more about the EGTs that Steinbauer is inducing in your engine

Get an EGT guage on that engine pronto....

EDIT: Is your vehicle fitted with a DPF?
And your Cats arent going to like all the smoke it would otherwise be producing...

    Hi Dorko,
Be carefull with turning the power setting up as your exhaust temperatures will also increase.
Good idea to have it dyno'd, but also the exhaust temperatures checked.
I had a DP Chip in my LC 100, and after doing both, I was able to back it off to a point where the I had the most torque at lower revs and lower temperatures at a lower setting and only sacrificed minor power.
Good to know how it goes pulling a van etc.
    Cheers, Craig

    Dorko,

from experience with this type of add on on the wifes Astra, the trip computer was telling me the car was using 1l/100km LESS than without the addon. After doing the manual calculations, it was actually using .1l/100km MORE than standard until I turned the chip up from the standard level to a 3 points higher where it was .8l/100km more calculated.

While it's not branded as a 'dp' chip, and the case is grey with green end caps, it's made by the same people in Germany who do the 'dp' boxes, and obviously tuned by somebody else. Now, I bought the thing expecting to use a little more fuel, and was VERY surprised at how little more it does use when fitted, Using the iPhone with the BMW app for acceleration etc (BMW power meter?) that my son put on the phone, it's 1second quicker to 100kmh. I got the performance increase I was after with not a huge lift in fuel usage.

Most of these things claim a drop in consumption, but I beleive that's only with the cars trip computer. Everybody I've spoked to with chips has said that when you do the figures manually, you do use more fuel.

That being said, after talking to diesel tuning place, I was told that the 2.7 and the 3.0 both run a little lean in a couple of areas, and a good chip/remap will make the car have more power but use a little less or the same fuel overall.

When they crack the system on the D4, I'll get a remap of the ECU done and see how it goes. Even if I end up using 1l/100km more, I'll be more than happy.

The discos fuel usage on the dash is ****. I always find it better to work it out by how much mileage i get out of the tank.

I had a Ford XR6 turbo and had they tune. The performance difference was lighting quicker and i was getting over 100kms extra on a tank! It was fantastic how much it improve the performance of the car.

My real test will be offroad, so hopefully i can get out this weekend.

EGT = Exhaust Gas Temperature. It is critical to keep it under a certain limit to prevent engine damage - a dyno isn't of much help here. If you're taking off like a scalded cat, you've probably got it set too high. Check and see how much smoke it blows after a week or so, and if you experience sudden drops of power after coasting etc, take it off! On diesel turbos, you shouldn't expect these devices to provide a huge difference in power - more like a slight but noticeable increase.

Personally I found the fuel sacrifice around the city too costly to justify it's use.

    Thanks Gordon.

    Anyway to test the EGT?

If i get a unusual amount of smoke... is it too late... EG> is the damage already done?

    Thanks

You can buy an EGT monitor - most of the 'go faster' shops sell them. I wouldn't think a short period of over-smoking would be indicative of instant failure. More like a warning.

I drove a D4 3.0L and thought by jolly its quick.

Why chip a brand new car whilst under warranty?
Did you check if you just void all warranty? Could have serious implications.

    Just a thought mate.
