Just had a set of 5 General Grabbers 255/55/R19 fitted today to D4 by JAX quickfit in Mackay. Total cost fitted and balanced was $280.50 each. Only drove home about 20klm but so far happy with very little appreciable difference in road noise. Road manners also seem excellent. Keen to try them out in some rough.

    Well done.
Mate, that's *exactly* why I bought them ! Mine have done 40,000 miles now and the fronts are worn out on the inside edge, so they'll go in the bin with the 2 rears becoming my spares. They've still got 4-5mm of tread on them, so for that task they're ideal.

Toyed with the idea of the GG's as they look a more aggressive pattern and might be more suited to the rougher conditions you chaps have, but given the mileage I've covered on these ATR's and the relatively small difference in cost between the 2 (about £30 a tyre here in the UK) the ATR's win for me. Quite honestly couldn't believe my luck when these 4 popped up for sale at £30 a tyre less than the GG, so the decision was an even easier one.

The other thing that's got me scratching my head is the price difference in Australia between the GG and the Scorpion. I know the Scorpion was voted the best ATR by some 4WD mag....I haven't read the article but I'm sure there wasn't alot in it..and certainly not $190 per tyre I'd wager....

When the Scorpion ATR came out, as far as I'm aware it was the only AT tyre available in 255/55/19 (the GG was still 6 months or so away), so Pirelli could pretty much charge what they wanted, albeit 'normal' Pirelli Scorpions in that size have always been pricey here. My current ones cost me £800 for the set in April 2010 and the price hasn't changed since then really. Back then, given the exchange rates between the UK & Aus I'd guess they were quite similarly priced (must've still been $2.2 - £1 if I recall correctly).

The difference is that since then, the rate's dropped massively in your favour but Pirelli haven't dropped the price to you guys, so the newer to you GG is priced better. It just doesn't have the long life of the Pirelli, whereas the older GG2 used to last forever.

I've been absolutely stunned at the life of the tyres (considering my standard road Conti's lasted 11,000 miles). As I said, my ATR's have done 42,000 miles now and still have 5mm on them, had I not left the knackered front bushes for 10,000 miles and knocked the insides off the fronts, I'd still have 4 serviceable tyres, rather than just 2. The temptation to carry on running this set to see how far they actually go is quite strong, but as I said in my initial post, I'm replacing them now purely because of the price of them in Aus, where my car will be heading in 2 months time.

    Smile Grabbers 19"

    HI all,

Just returned from 10,000 km Melbourne -> Cape York trip with a new set of Grabbers. So half the trip was off made road and included water, mud, sand and general rough stuff. The Grabbers were faultless, no punctures or failures and only a slight hum on the bitumen. We did get stuck in deep sand ruts twice, probably due to my reluctance to lower the tyre pressures enough - when I did we got out just fine. Sometimes we expect the Disco to do it all . Forgot to mention we did all this towing a CUB camper van which was also a great performer.

    Geoff B.

PS Met another Disco 4 towing a big van and he also had a new set of Grabbers for the trip.

That's cheap, especially for a 19" tyre that basically only fits the D3/4 vehicles.

Hi Craig - I couldn't get your link to work, but I assume it's the ones in the UK for a little over AU$1,000 & then there's shipping on that which may be damn expensive from there ....
