The max roof load on a Discovery 4 is 75kg! So take the weight of the rack system first... It then doesn't leave much capacity.

I looked at roof racks and decided the 75kg limit made it a waste of time.

My new van also has 2 Gerry can holders so I will also carry some diesel there as well. The new van also has a diesel heater so I will need to carry fuel for it as well.

I wouldn't carry fuel on the inside of the car.

You'll appreciate the spare hanging off the back when one cold, wet, windy day you are climbing out of the high country on a deeply rutted track and you manage to gash the sidewall on one of the rear tyres. You survey the situation and notice the auxilliary tank is sitting firmly on terrafirma and realise that's where the spare wheel once was!

    Been there .....
In a Landcruiser. B!tch of a job to jack up the car far enough to get the spare out from underneath. Slipping on mud and rocks. Wind blowing through me, raining, night coming on faster than a train ......

Whenever I think it's a PITA to open the spare wheel carrier I remember this night and all of a sudden it's no longer a problem

    75Kg? I think there's more here!

    Tote,

Unless the setup for the D4 has changed from the way it is setup on the D3, once the main tank is full, fuel just runs back into the aux tank via the filler neck. The Long Ranger kit includes a replacement filler - a 'Y' piece with two filler hoes/hoses below the single filler cap. Once the main tank fuel gauge shows 'full' I normally just switch the transfer pump off; unless I forget or am concentrating on something else.

I had enough trouble getting the spare out to rotate tyres and the thought of having to do that in good clothes even on a hard, dry surface to change a flat has me wanting an external spare, let alone on a muddy road in the rain. I haven't rotated the tyres since.

Maybe someone should design a carrier with a tilting arm.

    Dumb question Monday....

When D4 gets low on fuel you get a warning. I am wondering if there is a way to take this warning system to trigger fuel flow from the Aux tank.

Do any of the tech heads out there have any ideas on how to get that trigger from the cars system.

The plan would be then to have a timed switch to run fuel transfer.

I have been reading this thread with a lot of interest. I too have a heavy caravan with my D4 and intend on doing the big lap with part-time work along the way starting Jan 11. I previously had a long-range tank in my Pajero for many years and it proved to be a very good thing to have.
I have just completed a Sydney - Maryborough, Qld - Sydney trip and agree with the LR touring range limitations. I was often looking/hoping for a servo when the fuel gauge showed little left. This proved to be a little stressful at times.
I have a full size cargo barrier fitted in the D4 and I have wondered - instead of a spare wheel carrier to the rear what about folding the 2nd row seats flat and then lashing the spare wheel to the cargo barrier across the the 2nd row seats? I have a fridge fitted in the rear cargo space so that prevents the spare wheel going there.
    Any thoughts or comments anyone?
    Cheers
    George
