    I had an excellent run with my two sets of Coopers on the D1,, went to the MTZ's for some more serious workouts,,
    But it's just been recomended to me to get the GG's for the D2,, who makes them, what their $$$
    I'm tossing up between these (if their any good) and a set of Michies',, can't see myself doing much hard stuff in the D2, it's more for touring with some beach work, and light tracks,, must be getting soft in my old age,,

    Mate - General tyres in the US. The AT2 is a nice tyre. My brother sells them aswell as Maxxis. My mate has AT2 on his Disco 2 in a 31 inch and I have a Maxxis Bravo MA 751 in a 31 inch on my D2...both purchased at the same time and been offroad together. I prefer the Maxxis - it looks like a more road oriented tyre but looks are deceiving - its very much like the Michellin XPC but heavier duty and larger. The Maxxis are impeccable in the wet and under brakes. They are quiet and very durable and long wearing. They are made by Maxxis in Malaysia. Maxxis have become big in the serious off road set - Bighorn for example and the Bravo MA 751 have a good following and have also done very well in tyre reviews in the Mags in the last few years.

    I can compare the Maxxis on my own trucks (D1 and D2) to Pirrelli Scorpion AT in 31 inch, Michellin XPC in 29.5, Sime Alpina AT in 30 inch; Pirelli Scorp AT in 30 inch LT.

    If you tow you will love the Maxxis also - very strong carcass and high load rating in the LT.

    Cheers

    Mate - I cant see the AT on the US and AUS web sites just the AT2 still...didnt know the AT2 had been replaced. Will keep an eye out.

    Cheers

    ps. just saw a pic of them on the Brit boards..they look very much like a Sime Alpina AT...and they look dumbed down compared to the AT2...I see you cant stud them either whereas the AT2 you can.

    Hey weakest link, hows things mate? The age old tyre debate again hey? I'm going through the same thing myself atm. So i thought i'd put my 2cents is LOL
    I'd put Michelins on a 4wd just a few days after hell freezes over, they have a real bad habit of parting/blowing out when they still have 3-5mm of tread stilll on them.{more than just personal experience here}
    Coopers; well i've been running them on the D1 now for 4-5yrs and i have to say they don't live up to the hype. Those that have survived the miles i've done, look like i'll get no more than about 40-45000 k's out of them. Probably about 50% of dirt/offroad use and some hard roads in that however of those 2 that have taken puntures weren't able to be repaired, destroyed the inner belts apparently?? I've never had this happen on any other tyre, maybe was BS maybe unlucky not sure.
    GG, no nothing about them, had never heard of them until i got on this site
    Now after nearly 20 years and 500 000k's plus in 4wd's my winner to this day and has been for along time{yes i have gone away fron them but i've always end up going back to them is BFG. I've used both the MT's and all terrains and abused them both well beyond what i would expect a tyre to take and they have always stood up well, not infallible but damm good. Now i've just been researching the new KM2 and a friend has just put them on his D2 and the reviews are impressive.
    Just food for thought mate, or another level of complexity to an expensive conundrum
    good luck mate

    It may only be a european thing as it's been replaced due to new noise regulations on tyres. Tread pattern looks similar to the Pirelli ATR's I'm running, I may be tempted to try the GG's when my ATR's are dead, but on the current wear rate that'll be quite some time. They're not that much cheaper than the Pirelli for the 19" tyre, but they do seem to be winning lots of fans at the moment in the bad weather we've been having.

    GG AT2's

    Hi All,

    After recently kitting my D3 out with GG AT2's I'd like to throw my hat into the ring for the GG AT2's:
    - very handy off road ;
    - not noticibly noisier than the OEM rubbish tyres; and
    - very well mannered on the road (infcat they saved a Hyundai resembling the letter V just two days ago, I couldn't notice any difference in braking performance in the wet with antilock fully applied!)

    Never heard of Michelins failing but hey, never say never.

    BFG are wicked and may well be my next choice after my Coopers wear out.

    I can honestly say the ATR LT coopers have been great, my mates run them and some have the BFGs and I do like them better in off road situations.

    On road they are a bit noisier but my D1 is noisy anyhow.

    Thanks for the food for thought.

    Me either with Michellin. The michy XPC was a truly great tyre and SO much better than most OEM stuff. It was designed purely for the Discovery and did so well on it. I had mine for 80-90k before changing with very low tread. I had the same run on the D1. No sign of delamination etc. I have never heard of Michy blowing - that being the province of AMerican tyres early in their years of radials. I say that having been around a lot of off road drivers and a brother with an off road business for 14 years who also sells tyres.

    Cheers

    I am a fan of Michelin for on-road use, but not off-road, where the side walls are a little soft.

    The only failure I had with the Michi's was when travelling a gravel road (massive gravel size) in the Central West of NSW. The sidewall punctured on one Tyre.

    Best Wishes,
    Peter
