From my perspective it's great, as I don't need to have a smaller wheel or separate set of wheels. If you're running 19" on your D4 then getting a set of the GG AT's brought over might be a solution, not having to buy a new set of 18" wheels pays for a fair number of tyres I'd have thought...
Thanks Mike - yes, had followed that UK thread with interest - mainly in the hope the 18" ATs would be released by the time our new rims arrive late January. I'm still hoping this might happen (and that they might come to Aus in time!) as it looks like a good option indeed. I'm happy to be going down in rim sizes, not just for tyre choice but because it will give a bit more sidewall height too. And the new rims & tyre size options will allow a bit more rubber on the road as well, which has got to be a good thing in sand, particularly.

mmmm, so from what I read I shouldn't be in a hurry to replace the Michi's on my D2? I've been worried about the 2001 build date and looking around at whats available - great thread, very helpful! Maybe I should just wait till one blows?

My problem is I need x1 to replace a one worn tyre - probably the old spare - and for the life of me I can't find one at around 70% tread or even new.

    Any ideas?

Lesson learned - in Victoria your spare tyre doen't need to be in any sort of condition or even roadworthy, as I found out the hard way cause mine has a big chunk taken out of the sidewall! Of course if you were silly enough to put it on and use it, you car is instantly unroadworthy!!!
Is this the dumbest thing you've ever heard of?

    regards

I'll say! Fancy you, carrying around a spare that can't legally be used.

    Best Wishes,

    Jesse B,

I have been running a set of the Continental Cross Contact AT's for a about 8 months and have been pretty impressed.

Done a bit of off road work and they have performed very well and whilst they are slightly noisier than the OEM Continental UHP road tyres that came on my D3 the additional noise is in no way intrusive.

Just a late addition to help complicate matter for you and importantly they come in the correct size of 255/60/R18 and load rating.

My only complain, like many 18 inch AT tyres is availability. I would suggest getting at least all 5 replaced and if possible a 6th for any planned big trips and rotating two at a time.

    Good Luck,

    George

    What to do?

Followed this thread and many others concerning choice of tyres for D4. I have the 2.7TD flavour which seems to be a little more flexible but would prefer not to change down to 17" rims. Last year I bought Cooper ATR 265/60/18 in desperation as the GG AT2's I was promised failed to arrive in time for my trip. This size of Cooper ATR is not LT. They became a bit of a nightmare for me. I had 3 punctures across the Strzlecki and Plenty, one tyre was beyond repair and another I found when I got back and went to the tire dealer had a broken belt inside and was a throw away. At $350 each it was an expensive mistake. I will now use the 4 Coopers I have left to replace the OEM tyres when they expire just for road use. My decision I think now is to go with the GG AT2.... I am told you can order these from TireTrack in the US for $199 each plus approx. $350 for delivery... in OZ I have been quoted $375 each. Any views?

Thanks George. Yes, I have the Conti's in mind as an option, having read of some good experiences (like yours) on the forum. But at this stage I'm still hoping to squeeze in some extra size - not so much width but height / diameter, to get even more sidewall. Having said that, the "standard" dimensions certainly do limit the challenges re fitment! Appreciate the input though, and I may yet roll over and go this way.

The tyre dilemma continues. My factory original 18 inch Wranglers have given me a good run off road in sand and in some rocky terrain where I was exepcting to get a puncture but with lowered pressures they held up with some minor cuts. They are now getting a little more worn and that puncture/major tear is becoming more likely.

A sensible option seems to be to go to an oversized 18 inch all terrain tyre as there are a few options available and you start to get into the tyre sizes that the Toyotas and Patrols run. The issue though is legal compliance. Has anyone tried to get an engineering certificate or have any idea what is involved in doing this? The size I have in mind is a BFG T/A in 265/65x18 which is approx 38mm (1.5" old school) larger in diameter. The car also looks better if that counts and this would be an option for those with the 3.0L.

    Hi Graeme,
Do you have a contact name at Tire Track who I should order with? Many thanks.
