    Simpson desert fuel

hi. I'm about to get a 2.7 Discovery 4 and will be heading across the Simpson Desert in winter.

Can anyone advise me on how much fuel I need to carry? any other advice will be gratefully received.

    Regards, Robert

    IMG_5385.jpgHi Robert.
I did the trip from Mt Dare to Birdsville last August in my 2.7 TDV6 D4 and towed an Adventure Camper Trailer (Approx. 1600kgs).
BTW this is not a trip for the normal 6x4 trailer.
Left Mt Dare with a fulltank of 82 lt and three 20lt. jerries and arrived at Birdsville with one full jerry and approx 10 lt in the tank.
Computor said 11.8 for the entire trip which is pretty bloody good.
David Cox and the boys at Mt Dare will advise you and they always ask what capacity you have.
Also suggest you check the Mt Dare website for the very latest weather and track info before you go. Right now they are marooned by water so David had his wife and kids evacuated by chopper two days ago.
Make sure you take your time and enjoy the track. We took 5 days/nights so we could stop and setup camp by 3:30 each day.
The wildflowers and greenery were amazing in August.

    Hi Oakey

Each time ive done it the conditions have been different so check with the aprporiate athorities close to the time of departure to get the update. Also dont pull a trailer of any type accross the simpson as it is very much fround upon by locals and the birdsville roadhouse owners will charge accordingly to drag you out. Most maps even advise not towing accross. So travel light, be kind to your car and have a great time.

PS Last trip, I past two kimberly campers left behind broken. Long way to go to get parts

I went east to west in July 09.. left Birdsville with full tank and two jerries..Used it all! Gauge was showing below 1/4 full..When we got to Purnie Bore shared another jerry with the Wrangler that was on the trip just for safety's sake! Remember seeing 27lt/100k on the readout sometimes!

Anywhere betwen 75 and 250 litres depending on route, load and track conditions.

I have done the trip a few of times in the D3, twice Birdsville to Mt Dare and once Mt Dare to Mungarannie. I would recommend at least 60 litres spare. The latest trip used 116 litres in total.
Sand temperature, tyre pressures etc will all effect your useage.
