Disc 3 Shudders Going Up Hill

    Hi,

First of all I thought I might say great to be here and I'm excited about finally buying my Disc 3 TDV6 SE - Auto Trans. I love it! Have already started polishing the exterior trim from a sun damaged grey to black.
Got a 3 Month warranty with it and looks like I might have to take it in.
Was hoping I could share what I think might be an issue with the group for some suggestions if that's ok.

The car shudders/vibrates driving up hill.
Driving at 40-50Km/hr on a slope of around 40 degrees the car begins to vibrate until it drops into a lower gear which it then picks up speed and smoothes out and stops vibrating.
I'm guessing it might be a torque convertor or diff issue. Has anyone else had this sort of issue previously or know what it may be?

    Cheers,

    Barracuda

Sound like the auto... most probably the torque convertor as it loads up. Mine was identical to this on inclines and a service with fluid change etc stopped it.

Be aware though that the longer you wait, the worse it will become.

However the D3 is a pretty full on and an amazing truck and you will mostly enjoy your time with it but make good use of your warranty while you have it. There are a few known issues and it would be good practice to check them all out while you have warranty to back you up.

Welcome to the forum by the way!
    Cheers.

    Yep, The torque convertor.
I have just had my replaced.
    Same symptoms exactly.
Go to an auto trans specialist, as a suggestion.
Huge price variance to the usual.

    FYI Costings>

    X1 ZXF-626011 6HP26 FILTER FOR STEEL PAN $17.60
    X1 ZX-626010 STEEL PAN 6HP26 (REPLACES PLASTIC) $186.35
    X1 ZPG-626006 6HP26 GASKET FOR STEEL PAN $9.38
    X21 ZX-626030 BOLTS FOR STEEL PAN $85.26
    X10 1 LTR ATF Z FLITE 6 OEM 6 SPEED ZF FLUID R-128 $411.20
    X1 181566 TORQUE CONVERTER $750.00
    X1 WORKSHOP MATERIALS ETC $40.00

    SUB TOTAL $1,499.99

    LABOUR: $800.00

    10% GST $230.00

    FINAL TOTAL $2,530.00 INC GST

20,000KM WARRANTY OR 12 MONTHS WHICH EVER FIRST.

If you have a Auto Trans Shudder, start looking at the TC first.
This was certainly a less expensive option, and the outcome l am very happy with.

Torque converter most likely. With your warranty they will send it to A&B in Melbourne to be fixed. They do a good job.

    You guys a brilliant.
Thanks for that. Looks like I'll be sending it back for a new Torque Convertor.
Bought the truck from Trivett so I'm suppose to be getting a replacement Discovery while I wait for my baby to get fixed. That should be a bit of a treat also. Hope it a new Disc 4. Ha ha

    Keep you boys posted.

JB hope it all goes well for you and you they don't give you a Prado for the loan .

Dave I had been told by someone who 'should' know that all the reco ones out there are obviously failed ones & no one has really resolved the issue with a rebuild option. This was several months ago however & the issue is now on a large enough scale I'm sure for reco units to have been a priority to get resolved. Don't know why they couldn't reco them successfully at that stage... seemed a little odd I thought.

I've never rebuilt an auto let alone a TC so it's good to hear this has worked well for you. What sort of warranty did you get?

Apologies for the sticky nose, I'm keen to consider all options in the event I have to make that decision at some stage.

    Cheers.

    Mully,

I don't know yet what they'll be doing. I've just contacted them to make an appointment but I will be probing them to make sure they do a good job. The car is 2nd hand and it came with 3 month warranty.
Any tips for what I should be telling them to do or use in the repair job?

BTW, I'm suppose to be getting a LR as a courtesy car. Cross fingers....

The warranty l have recieved is 12 months or 20,000k, which ever comes first.
I am very happy with the end result.
Ensure when they do the TC, that the auto trans is serviced also.
Degeneration of the TC would most certainly of fouled the auto trans fluid with metal particals, that block the filter and cause major issues.
Work on this basis, and success is acheivable with this issue.
In my previous post, l have noted the costs to me to date.
    Hope it helps
    Cheers Dave
