						Well, I just had my TDV MY07SE (so NOT an early model) WITH a ediff (never used/activated) in for it's 4 year service and was told it is failing and needs replacement. The dealer had allready contacted Alliance (the extended warranty people) who have 'pre-approved' it and so the dealer had ordered it!!
My extended warrenty expires in April 2012.
The car has 70,200Km on it and has had no real 4wd'ing and little in the way of towing anything other than an occassional box trailer with some wood once or twice.
It mostly does the communte to work (6.5Km) and the occassional long trip on highways with the family.
I certainly wouldn't say that this is NORMAL wear. AND that I am lucky I have the extended warranty! 4 years CAN NOT be normal life expectancy surely??
Basically means that any future LR products will have the extended warranty taken at purchase and the car got rid of before it expires. Why take the risk, of what is building up to be a rather long list of common issues occurring (hand brake, EGR, Diff, excessive tyre wear, etc) even when the car is within the 3 year manufacturers warranty?

Did you suspect there was a problem, or has the dealer bought it to your attention.
Is this limited to the e diff type?
A diff failing on a 4 year old vehicle! holy smokes, maybe they applied the same philosophy as ZF did towards the 'gearbox filled for life'

As Neil note the front diff is a reasonably well know problem, not heard of many with the rear diff having an issue.
There is plenty of discussion about ensuring the diff oils are changed a much more regular intervals than suggested by LR. I had my last service (45K) done by a Sydney independent and he advised me he was going to change the diff oil and did that together with the normal service for less that the dealer had quoted me.
Still failing diffs are a concern particularly in a vehicle that sounds like it has done very little if any "hard work".
Extended warranty is obviously a good idea.

My independant suggests changing all oils and filters after the first three thousand k's. It makes sense to me - however fine modern machining has become, there is still likely to be some swarf from the running in process.
He also recommends transmission oil changes at 40,000 k's. He has stocks of the relatively inexpensive Penrite ATF that was available before ZF stopped supplying their special additive to Penrite.

						I arranged to have my 3.0 engine oil changed at 9K but the correct oil was unavailable from LR so had to wait until 22K, although possibly the "correct" oil was for DPF-fitted vehicles, which mine is not. I had both diff oils changed at 9K and again at 45K to check for metal contamination and will have all oils changed shortly before the end of warranty which will be around 90K.

						Hello All,
I had my D3 transmission drained, flushed and refilled with new Penrite ATF Synthetic oil by a Sydney Indy in May, 2010. This was at 110500 Km and it was a great improvement until 3 months and 7000 Km later when I started having problems and eventually required a new gearbox.
Of course it may have not been the Penrite oil which was the cause but if I go down this road again I will definately use ZF ATF. Also I have since been told by a Ford workshop foreman that when he was on ZF training course the German instructor stressed this point. I know that OEM people always say this but he convinced the mechanic.
