Safari snorkel D4 - How/where does it fit

    Hi all,

Am soon getting a snorkel put in and am just curious where the pipework goes? Anyone with one (not the landrover raised air intake) care to describe the set up and/or picks if possible.

I'm also guessing some holes and rivets in the window A frame to hold the upright in place?

    many thanks

I have fitted a few of these.
The pipe work runs from the air intake grille on the rhs & in along a chanel built into the upper guard. Holes will need to be drilled, inner panels will need to be cut away too.
A plate is pop riveted to the "A" pillar which holds the upright section.

Sorry don't have pic's as I now have the LR RAI.

    Cheers

Is this a Petrol or TD? The A pillar trim needs to have a small slit cut in it. You need to be careful when you do it to make it neat. The kit comes with rivets. You need to drill holes in the A Pillar, put sealer on it, then pop rivet it together. You need an extra sharp bit, and have to be careful not to push the bit in too far and hit something.

The Template for the body cut is 5 holes if I recall. The template calls for a lot larger holes than are really required. You can avoid giant holes, by trying to be as precise as possible when marking. A body bit works the best, and won't mess up the paint work.

In the NA V8 4.4 Petrol, you have to remove the airbox, and then cut based on a template in order to enlarge the hole so the elbow will fit. A piece of hose fits between the elbow and the snorkel body. Sealer is placed on a supplied gasket when you put the airbox back together.

Once it is all done, you will have a sealed air supply from the top of the snorkel to the air box. You'll notice in the bottom of the air box a rubber flap, which acts as a one way valve to allow water to escape that enters into the box. The A Pillars pictured top is a new one, and bottom is the old one. The old ones dried out, and the mounts crack, one of the causes of leaks on the LR3's. The new one seems stouter.

Didn't get to many progress pictures, but it took a few hours all in all. I hope this helps.

Ozzy119 - I did an install of a Safari Snorkel this weekend, in between storms.

I bought it second hand from the UK - and it was a few hundred cheaper than getting a new one.

I took some photos of the install process and just uploaded them to the disco3 site - here is the link:
DISCO3.CO.UK Photo Gallery - Safari Snorkel Install

FYI, I bought 83mm flexible hose which fitted the snorkel body ok - but had to modify the airbox to allow it to fit. FWIW, the circumference of the snorkel inlet to flexible hose was 26cm and the original airbox inlet was 29cm. So I had to trim that off - just leaving the inner pipe and fitted the hose to that.

I would have fitted Safari Snorkel hose, elbow to airbox - but they are being pitb's to order spare parts.

    Anyhow, job done.

    Cheers,
    Rob

    Hey Rob - two things:
    1) Hopefully you haven't got "Popeye forearms" - there is bugger-all space in between the guard and body to do up the nyloc nuts holding the snorkel body to the guard. Otherwise, be prepared for some welts.
    2) The storms included lightning - a great motivator to finish the job!

BTW, the second hand snorkel I got never came with the Safari hose or elbow to airbox - as the guy kept it to put on his RAI which he preferred the look of. I had a LR RAI on my D3 and now Safari on D4: from a noise and aesthetic perspective - there is nothing in it!

Thanks Jonsie not quite popeye arms but not as bad as my mechanic who's fitting the ARB bar with a broken arm... I haven't checked in the box yet but I assume the paint treatment after drilling the holes is included...
