    ScanGauge II & Transmission Temp?

Has anyone been able to read or show reliable transmission temps for D3/4 RRS on Scangauge II or other devices such as OBDII modules and downloads like Torque

I pull a 2.5 t van with my 06 D3 TDv6 and would like to be able to monitor the transmission temp. I also fitted the steel pan and would like to change the trans fluid more often so the need to read the trans temp is required for correct fluid levels.

    Cheers

I use a Torque Pro (OBD2 & Car) $4.85 from Play store (Android app market)
and the module is from Ebay (ELM327 Mini Bluetooth Auto OBDII Car scan Diagnostic tool) I think it was around the $30 mark?

It will scan for faults and give you real time info etc but I don't think it can reset your service message? Still working it out.

Look on YouTube about the app.

I have used this to see my trans temp (87c) but not while towing yet.

    Cheers

You are saying that the Torque app will actually display automatic transmission temperature. I am impressed.

I cannot figure out how to get my ScanGauge II to display the automatic transmission temperature. If the Torque app can find it, then the ScanGauge should as well - I just wonder how?

bbyer, my reasoning exactly you would think that the ScanGauge would be able to access the transmission temperature if the Torque app can, my understanding is both are reading OBDII information at the ECU service port.

I know quite a few forum members have the ScanGauge fitted hence my query as it would make the gauge a very useful tool when towing, so has anyone managed to obtain Trans temps with ScanGauge?

Rollin over you are saying you have seen your trans temp (87c) is this the only trans temperature the Torque app has displayed? as I would have thought it would not be a static fig but would vary subject to conditions. Speed, Hills, etc or was this a one off standing at Idle reading.

    Cheers

I don't have it in all the time...the car was up to temp before I plugged it in. I had to go up town so I tried it out for 5mins and the temp was at 87c.

I have read that the Torque Pro is only for Android.
Is there also a App for the iPhone so it may also monitor the OBD2 Data?

Rev and a couple of others.....but none monitor transmission temp.

Exact water temp is measured. Sits at about 87 then goes as high as 96 towing heavy weight.

Has boost, maf inlet temps, maf air flow volume, and other stuff.

I had a Scangauage II on my RRs for a year and never got it to read transmission temps.

    Torque Scan add on.

I noted on the Torque Pro website below, a free add on advertised in the left column that is called Torque Scan.

From what I can determine, Torque Scan is perhaps like the X Gauge feature of the ScanGauge that allows new PID's, (I guess that is what they are called.) to be either read or entered. If so, I wondered if the PID for the Automatic Transmission oil temp could be read using Torque Scan.

I would think that a PID does not vary from app to app and hence if a PID could be read off Torque Scan, then it could be entered into X-Gauge.

Well maybe I dream, but it is a thought.

Transmission oil temperature, like all temperature measurements depends upon where it is measured. I do not really know where the temperature sensor that is within the ZF is located but I presume it somehow reflects "normal" oil pan temperature.

I gather the range of normal transmission oil pan temperatures is much like engine coolant temperature, from 175F to 200F, (80C to 95C). If the temperature gets to 300F, (150C), there is a problem.

Each ecu is addressed by its PID. Sensors themselves are not addressible but certain data can be read from an ecu using standardised parameters if the PID is known. In some countries engine emission related data is mandated by law to be standardised hence the availability of software using generic OBDII readers to extract such data as coolant temp.
