Gearbox issue? Advice for next course of action needed

Hi Guys, Our 2009 D4 has 133k on the clock. Need advice on the next course of action for diagnosis/fix etc.

I've mentioned before somewhere here that we have a fairly steep hill straight out of our drive. When the cars cold and going up the hill it makes an additional noise up the front with a slight vibration. Kind of like a whine for a few seconds. Once car is warm its gone and only really returns if on steep hills i.e. under additional load.

Yesterday when towing the boat (approx 1.8tonne) I had to go up a very steep hill from a complete stop. The whine was really loud and sounded/felt like there was slipping/wind-up.

Its been mentioned on here it might be the torque convertor on the way out??

    Some facts:
    - second owner and had for 6 months.
    - trans has never had a oil change to our knowledge
    - Had 4 "Gearbox Failure" alerts always straight after starting the vehicle. Turn off and back on clears it.
    - Latest "Gearbox Failure" came on after I noticed the M/S lights where on after starting. Turn off and back on and "Gearbox Failure" message appeared.
    - Wheels do need an alinement (doubt thats the problem though).

So everything seems to point to the Trans.

I don't have a diag tool too see what error code is behind the gearbox fault.

Does a troupe convertor replacement mean a rebuild or similar pricing?

All looking to be expensive either way.

I'm on the northern beaches and plenty of Trans places around just dont know whos are best at ZF.

    Sorry for loooong post... lol.

    Cheers guys.

    Calis

I wonder whether low oil level might be the cause. If it is low it could be just topped up but I'd be changing the oil regardless of whether its low or not.

yeah my instinct is to do the steel pan and oil change. It should be done regardless anyway. Good place to start I guess for $700 odd dollars

Try getting your oil from the UK. I paid about $400 shipped for 15 litres from LRseries. Much better than the $70 per litre LRA will try to charge you.

Thanks Rich, I'll take a look. I've seen it mentioned on here guys are getting direct from ZF in Oz as well and bypassing LRA.

    Update:

Towed the boat last night for approx 80mins. all up with some fairly decent long steep hills and I think I managed to just hear the noise once. Cant tell now if I'm just being paranoid and wanting to hear things!!. Other then that it was completely normal. No noise or vibration. Power was fine etc etc.

It seems that when the vehicle is under real load ie. towing that the noise/vibration doesn't happen. (other then the other day when I parked her on a huge hill and tried to take off from a complete stop!.)

Towing it back to storage tonight so will see if anything changes.

Meanwhile will get ordering the pan and oil.

Ok so I called ZF and got the pan/filter/screws/gasket and oil part numbers.

But ZF dont seem to sell direct and they put me onto a crew who only sell wholesale..lol

So any tips on who to source this through?

I'm not really that interested in saving $50 or $100 by getting them OS if I can just go pickup in Syd somewhere.

    Cheers.

Try Furious Performance, they were mentioned on this forum. This ebay ad is no longer current but might give the contact details.

That's interesting Graeme because when I asked them they referred me to a reseller. ??
