    D3 TDV6 Intercooler upgrade options?

    The intercooler on my D3 caught some minor damage in it's off road escapade that caused it to be written off, but also some fool, in his infinite wisdom, decided that it would be a good idea to attempt to clean the 20 kilos of red dust out of the very delicate aluminium fins with a pressure washer (ok, it was me)

    So, faced with a few hours work with a miniature screwdriver to try and straighten out my heavy handed error, I'm looking to replace or upgrade instead.

    The options I've found:
    The OEM one is about $200 (I'm not going to look for second hand), with a core area approximately 700mm x 240mm.
    An Allisport "Fast Road", about $900 from the UK, or a couple of places down south sell them for ~$1100. Core area 680mm x 360mm
    I've found a couple of posts on Disco3 reporting good success with the intercooler from a Ford Sierra Cosworth, which would be about $240 and has a core area 600mm x 400mm.

    Any other options that I've missed? Would the intercooler from a D4 3.0 fit, (after blanking off the intake from the second turbo) as the output flange from the top of the intercooler into the engine intake duct looks like it would loop over the pipe that leads from the air filter box to the turbo intake.

    Increasing the core area by 50% won't be much use until I can afford to get a remap done later on, but seems like it will be worth doing whilst it's all in bits?

    Well it looks like the Cosworth option is the one.

    However, the inlet and outlet pipes are 3" diameter, so require a reducer to fit the D3 hoses.

    Does anyone have a standard TDV6 intercooler hose to hand to measure the inside diameter for me.

    (Yes, I've googled it, and no I'm not being lazy - I still can't bend over the engine bay to be able to pull one off myself)

    Any follow up on this? Just been watching some of my intake temps here when out on the highway, easily over 60degC without my camper. But then again thats running with ambient temps over 40degC too

    any opinions on using one?

    I’m going to try and be polite - but why? Sure they’re more efficient but they add heaps pf complexity with coolant and pumps. You have a perfectly good intercooler in there. I ran a water to air on a petrol 2L turbo sports car in years gone by but it just wasn’t worth the hassle.

    Discovery’s are unreliable enough - don’t add even more complexity!

    Surely,particularly in cooler weather, the engine intake air after the intercooler would be way cooler than the coolant temps?

    Wouldn't a water cooled intercooler be last resort if an air to air couldnt be fitted for whatever reason?

    Front mounted intercooler such as in D3/4,seem to work well I would just leave it.

    Downside of WAIC is heat soak.
    Efficiency can be higher until that point then it’s worse.

    Add in pumps, radiator and additional plumbing and the benefits start to erode on a 4wd.

    It doesn’t use the engine coolant. It uses an independent system. Water to air is a better system but just not worth the complexity for day to day use

    Ok,well,yes,a complete system is going to be complex.

    Maybe thats what an LC needs, being top mounted which is supposedly rather inefficient.

    So the advantage is that you can have shorter air runs which improves throttle response, and with complex front ends, trying to squeeze in a complete air/air intercooler can be difficult. A smaller water radiator is easier to fit up front.
