It must have hurt to retrofit more basic components. No TR nor e-diff it appears, which might have been useful on an expedition vehicle.
Thought this would have attracted a bit of attention.

Apparently 155kw D4 with coil springs & 18" wheels for South Africa.
Perhaps it is an acknowledgement that the new Defender will not be ready when the current one is discontinued & this version of the D4 is a replacement albeit temporary.
It also acknowledges that the brakes/callipers can be smaller on a D4.
Cheers

Cheaper to buy a second hand D3, you don't need 155kw with an expedition anyway, and you at least you have the ability to fit 17s for better off road tyres.
I can hear the phone call now
Hello LR Assit, can I help you
Hello, yes I've broken down.
That's no good, where are you??
I'm in the Gobi desert!!
What's the nearest cross street??
There is no cross street, I'm in a desert!!
Expedition vehicle!! don't think so
Cheers Baz.

That's just a marketing ploy to add an "S" level price point car.
That's no expedition vehicle.

The brakes are from the 2.7 D3/D4 so will fit 17" rims.

They have actually listened to the market?????
Surprised they dropped the terrain response.
Bigger fuel tank and air suspension, then it would be good for the market here you would think.
Ground clearence would be an issue as it was with the D3 coiler, thats why it needs the air suspension,or an aftermarket raise
Good to see 17's will fit
Maybe this is why ARB developed an air locker for the front of the D4 - getting ready for the non-terrain response equipped vehicle?

Terrain Response has always wanted to talk to the air suspension ecu to raise it in at least one of the settings (although the raise doesn't occur if a trailer is attached) so without the air suspension ecu acknowledging the request, TR will fault so cannot be fitted. It wouldn't take much of a software change to check the CCF for air suspension not fitted to ignore the suspension ecu functions if LR was at all serious about not having air suspension on an "expedition" vehicle.
I too suspect LR have just made a cheap entry level version because they can't sell enough fully-kitted ones in that market.

Personally I think LR are on the right track. Offer rubber floor instead of carpet, conventional shifter in-lieu of the dial and I'm on my way trading in my MY12 HSE for one.
Unless they offer a height increase in the suspension(aftermaket will void the warranty) it will never do a lot of the roads without a lot of damage under the car.
They are thinking at least about the real off road travelers at long last, you just need the dealers to endorse it
Cheers Baz.
