From looking at my brother's Territory, it has a different air intake/intercooler setup and different alternator as well. He said there have been comments about the AWD versions not going well offroad - due to water ingress in their alternator.
Does your brother's have electric steering? If so then the alternator should be higher o/p than the D3's.

The bigger problem with the Terri is the lack of clearance, the AWD is OK on gravel but you wouldn't take it very far 'off road'.
The diesel also has a fuel cooler which is quite exposed at the RHS of the front bumper, several reports on the Ford Forum of these coolers leaking after a stone impact (road use).
While waiting for the diesel to be launched (I've had a diesel Terri for 2 years now) I heard that the fuel injection was developed locally by Bosch.
Terri also has problems of drive-by-wire lag but it isn't consistent. Claims on forums that it's the torque convertor but it certainly seems to get confused if you approach a junction on a trailing throttle then plant it.
Also occasionally puts out a lot of smoke (no DPF).
I guess anything is possible and there must be motors available in wreckers it would just take someone to sort out the electronics......

LR are the only other company with a single turbo fitted to the 27DT and LR was still owned by Ford during this point in development. It wouldn't make sense for Ford to put further development into the engine when the LR version fit the bill quite well. My bet is Ford Aust just bought the LR version and then just moved a few things around to fit the engine bay of the terri...
My recollection is that the Jaguar version of the 2.7 litre is twin turbo and the LR version one larger turbo. I think that the Terri uses the single turbo version.
