I think you'll find all dealers have a finely-tuned Sales Prevention Department. I've had similar experiences at several dealerships over the past three or four years, Audi and LR included. At the Audi dealer I walked in, wandered around for ten minutes before some young guy bothered to ask me anything, finally chose a car, told him to add up the options I wanted and give me a call with a price. Never heard from him again.
At the LR dealer across the street, I test drove a new Sport (This was in 2010), told him to call me with his best price after he'd spoken to his boss...and never heard from him again. Eventually drove clear across town to their rival dealer (unfortunately owned by the same businessman) and demanded they sell me one on the spot. Jeez, how hard does it have to be to give someone your money?
Actually I like doing that, usually gardening clothes, and parking some distance away, the walking in.
If I get decent service then, I'll get decent service after.
One of the best is still Lexus; even though salesman didn't think I had the cash (didn't see my car, and made remark about trade in), was happy for me to test drive. After seeing my car, even followed up on the test drive...
