I'm only throwing another possibility into the scene because gearbox indecision has been the culprit many times before although not related to inclines. The gbox ecu requests the ecm to go into reduced power mode before making a gear change then cancels the request after the gear has been engaged so if the box is changing its mind during the process then the engine can be lacking power for some time. I hope it gets sorted soon and that its not indeed normal.

My MY10 D4 3.0l is in at the dealers at the moment for similar issue. Power drops off to a point where accelerator seems unresponsive, then comes back on the power. Happens usually around 1600 rpm when under some load, ie going up slight to moderate incline, towing trailer etc. Also seems to be dormant when outside temp is below ~20. Have been chasing this issue since January. It hadn't throw a fault this whole time until just a couple of weeks ago coming home from Fraser Island on the Bruce highway towing the camper. Went into restricted performance mode/limp mode.
Heard from the dealer today who said the think they've found it. They have a compressor shutoff valve on order which should be fitted tomorrow. This sounds similar to what Graeme was referring to earlier in this thread.
I'll keep checking in on this thread to see how things transpire and keep you up to date with my results.
This is another interesting thread with some similarities.

Hi Matt,
That's the valve - isolation or shut-off valve and your symptoms were as mine were. I understand that the replacment valves have a modification that's supposed to stop grit from getting between the bracket mounted on the shaft and the housing. I'd like to know just what the difference is in case I can modify mine to prevent it happening again.
Edit: If Meccles' RRS problem is the same then maybe the design hasn't changed or hasn't changed enough.

Hey people's
Throw my two bob's worth in. I can get mine to surge lose power then take off with a cloud of black smoke. Usually when manually upshifting on acceleration from second to third at approx 2000rpm. But typically dealer can't fault it.
Does this sound like a secondary turbo controller issue.
Cheers
Steve
Mine doesn't provide smooth power when manually upshifting with part throttle when the 2nd turbo was in use but is not in the higher gear, which is somewhere around 2000-2200 rpm in the lower gear. However IIRC it was much better just after the valve's spindle was cleaned so might have to give it another clean. As I've already stated, its easy to check.

Well im happy to post that I picked my D4 up this arvo and test drove it up Mt Coot-tha (a known spot that the surging presents itself) and it appears the surge has gone. This is a great relief to me as this has been an issue since January. Luckily I have the extended warranty so cost to me was $0.
The real test will come when I take the trailer for a spin up the beach as that was when it was at it's worst.
Graeme, if you want a pic of the replacement part let me know.
Good luck Rifi1 with your issue, I hope the info here will help sought it out.
Would this thread be a good candidate for the Good Oil section of the forum? I know i did a bit of searching and didn't find much at the time.
Matt.
