    D3 Transmission Service - Necessary?

    G'day,

Got some good advice recently to take my D3 to Rovertech in Perth for the next service, called them today to book it in and they recommended that i get the transmission serviced noting it has done more than 80K kms, first I have heard of this requirement and it is around $1100 to do. I was told that if not done the transmission would not last beyond 160K ks. Does anyone know anything about this? Was taking the car to Rovertech as they are reported to be cheaper than Southern Land Rover...nasty shock to hear about the transmission servicing. Any info would be appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Chris

The transmission fluid is rated for about 60k miles, per ZF. It would be good preventative maintenance to service it. I assume by service it, they mean change the pan/filter and fluid.

i actually recommend servicing these transmissions at 60,000km if towing lots, and after the first service the oil pan doesn't require replacement again, just oil, filter and pan gasket.

the price you were quoted is about right.

Rovertech usually uses Transmissions R Us in Balcatta to do the transmission service. You can save a bit by taking it there yourself. They did my D4 at about 90,000km and they just did the 50,000km oil change that both Rovertech and Transmissions R Us recommend after the initial service and steel pan installation.

I think that the consensus of opinion on the forum is that the transmission should be serviced as Kevin has suggested to you, although a few people disagree.

There are now tens of thousands of these gearboxes out there - in Falcon taxis, etc. If you can find a large, competent auto transmission shop - you may find a much better price. For example, there is a large auto shop close to my home - has about 8 hoists!) and they quoted me $695 to replace ATF and install a new steel pan and filter. $1100 to $1300 sounds like LR labour rates to me!

Your being screwed my friend and whilst it is a necessity, find another shop.
It should be around $600 for the service or at least that is what I paid in Sydney.

+1 a transmission service is cheaper than a new transmission by about $5500.00
