So the VIN is established before the end of the specific build.

Yes. Whether it gets allocated before build starts or soon after I don't know but I suspect before it starts so that the vehicle gets built to the required specs that exist at the time.

Not quite as the special add-ons from the customer go with the order to the factory before the car is ever ordered to built.

Except when its not too late to alter one already on the assembly line so as to get the special order vehicle to the customer ASAP. That happened with my D4 when my 1st one arrived with features that I didn't want - a suitable one (ie colour, e-diff and engine) on the assembly line had its intended features altered to match my order and I got that one quite quickly.

    Dealer error.
Lucky, dealer probaby found another on the assembly line with your specs. Hard to alter the timing/specs on a rolling line.

No, not dealer error - LR production scheduling mishap as the order was placed after the close of the first day window and all 3.0s up until then got the DPF and sat-nav, reverting to standard specs after that date. Mine was not supposed to be built in the first day window batch but got added to that batch after the close-off date. They probably thought that they were doing me a favour.

I was advised that altering in-production builds is regularly done just to get something started on the production line, but allowing for changes to be made for the later fitted items where the change doesn't impact on the timing of the build.

I'm not guessing, instead relying on the information provided by my dealer.
